RARE TWIN TROPICAL STORMS EXPECTED TO FORM; A COMPLEX SITUATION IS LIKELY TO UNFOLD
There is heightened tropical activity across the Atlantic, with a complex situation developing involving two tropical waves now being monitored by the National Hurricane Center: Invest 93L and 94L.
Invest 93L β This system has a very high (90%) chance of development within the next 48 hours. A Tropical Depression or Storm is expected to form by tonight, well northeast of the Northern Lesser Antilles.
Invest 94L β This wave, which brought heavy rainfall and thunderstorms to Trinidad, Tobago, and the Lesser Antilles on Tuesday, September 23rd, carries a high (80%) chance of development over the next 7 days.
It is unusual to see two tropical cyclones forming in such close proximity. By this weekend into early next week, both systems could reach Tropical Storm or Hurricane strength near the waters east of Florida and the U.S. East Coast. Their interaction may involve the Fujiwhara Effectβa phenomenon where nearby storms influence each otherβs paths:
Far apart (900+ miles / 1450 km): Minimal interaction; each storm follows its own track.
Moderately close (900β350 miles / 1450β560 km): The storms begin to orbit a common center, altering their speed and direction.
Very close (under 220 miles / 350 km): Either the stronger storm absorbs the weaker one, or both weaken due to destructive interaction.
If equal in strength: They may merge into a single, stronger systemβor continue orbiting each other before separating.
This creates a highly complex forecast, and outcomes remain uncertain. Residents of Haiti, the Dominican Republic, the Turks and Caicos, the Bahamas, and Florida should closely monitor updates on these disturbances.
Meanwhile, Hurricane Gabrielle is on track to impact the Azores between Thursday and Friday. A Hurricane Warning has been issued for all islands as a direct strike appears imminent.
Additionally, another tropical waveβnot expected to developβis forecast to move into the Lesser Antilles on Saturday, September 27th, bringing an increased risk of showers and thunderstorms.
