Let's talk about snails. In the manga, anime, and live-action series One Piece, people use snails called Den Den Mushi as wireless telephones. The name Den Den Mushi comes from an old Japanese word for snail (でんでんむし).

What's interesting is that Den Den Mushi are based on real 19th century science. According to the Infernal Dictionary, using snails to replace the telegraph for instant long-distance communication was an area of serious scientific inquiry in the late 1800s.

On page 665 of the Infernal Dictionary, Ultimate Edition (article: "Snails"), tells us researchers were trying to prove two snails could be "mesmerized" and used to communicate telepathically from halfway around the world. In a follow-up article, presumably added years later in a newer edition of the Infernal Dictionary, de Plancy abandons the idea of snail-to-snail wireless communication.
