πŸ“ Lupton, Arizona

Lupton sits right on the Arizona-New Mexico border and is the first town a traveler hits after crossing into Arizona from the east, or the last one before leaving.

For decades it was famous for its roadside trading posts competing furiously for tourist dollars with giant signs, teepees, and promises of authentic Native American jewelry.

The border has always been good for business out here.

πŸ“ La Posada Hotel, Winslow, Arizona

Mary Colter designed La Posada in 1929 as the last great Harvey House, a railroad hotel meant to feel like a Spanish land grant estate.

It nearly fell to the wrecking ball in the 1990s. A pair of preservationists bought it, restored it room by room, and today it is considered one of the finest historic hotels in the American Southwest.

πŸ“ Jackrabbit Trading Post, Joseph City, Arizona

Did you know the Jackrabbit Trading Post has been luring Route 66 travelers off the highway since 1949 with one of the most recognized roadside signs on the Mother Road?

The bold black and yellow jackrabbit billboard appeared for hundreds of miles in each direction with a simple message... "HERE IT IS".

People drove across the country just to find out what "it" was. Some still do.

πŸ“ Grand Canyon Caverns, Arizona

Sixty-two feet underground along Route 66 near Peach Springs sits one of the largest dry caverns in the United States.

During the Cuban Missile Crisis the caverns were stocked with enough food and water to shelter 2,000 people for two weeks.

πŸ“ Cool Springs Station, Arizona

Tucked into the Black Mountains on one of the most dramatic stretches of Arizona's Route 66, Cool Springs Station burned to the ground in 1966 and sat in ruins for decades.

A passionate Route 66 enthusiast rebuilt it stone by stone from old photographs.

Today it stands exactly as it did in the 1930s. The drive to get there is half the reason to go.
