The Seminoles were here long before Fort Pierce, Vero Beach or Stuart, and their history remains deeply connected to the Treasure Coast, from the creeks and prairies to the wetlands surrounding Lake Okeechobee.
That history is still being explored today. On Oct. 17, the Smithsonian’s traveling exhibition “Americans” opens at the historic Okeechobee County Courthouse, offering a closer look at the ways American Indian history and culture are woven into our nation’s story.

For nearly 20 years, Indian River Magazine has tried to tell the stories of the people who made the Treasure Coast what it is today.
