One of the biggest mistakes beginners make with sugar washes?

👉 Too much sugar.
👉 Unrealistic ABV targets.
👉 No understanding of starting gravity.

That usually leads to:
❌ stressed yeast
❌ stalled ferments
❌ weird flavors
❌ lower yields
❌ frustration

So I put together a free beginner-friendly PDF guide that breaks the whole process down simply.

Inside the guide:
âś” How sugar affects your ferment
âś” How to choose realistic ABV targets
âś” How to build a sugar wash recipe step-by-step
✔ Why “more sugar” is NOT always better
✔️Why yeast choice matters
âś” Beginner-friendly fermentation concepts explained simply

You can grab the free PDF here:

Here's a tip of the week for new shiners
I see a lot of beginners get overwhelmed trying to learn everything at once.
So here’s the simple path I’d give them:
1. Start with a proven recipe
Don’t reinvent the wheel yet.
Pick something people have made a thousand times everyone knows it works.
2. Learn how to control your ferment
This is where most problems happen.
Temperature, pH, yeast health…
Get this right and everything else gets easier.
3. THEN start figuring out your cuts
This is where your personal preference comes in.
There’s no single “right” answer—but you need a good ferment first.
4. Keep your run simple
No matter what still you’re using… just run it low and slow.
That’s how you learn without overthinking everything.
Most beginners try to do all 4 at once…
and that’s where the frustration kicks in.

Good luck and shine on. Let me know if there are specific topics you would like me to post about.

There’s a buzz of excitement in the air at Still’n The clear at the
moment. We have been developing what we believe to be the
best distilling app on the market, and the members of our ABV
Society are carrying out the Beta-testing. If you would like to be
part of that experience, read on.

As distillers, we all start out with the best intentions of keeping
logs and notebooks with all our recipes, mash bills, fermentation
information and distilling notes. We start off well. We have our
conversion charts and the first 20 or so of our end to end records.
Then, one day, we misplace our notebook and promise ourselves
we’ll fill it in later. We write a change to our process on a scrap of
paper and misplace it. All of a sudden, we haven’t kept a proper
record for months. Our scraps of paper and books get lost.
All that time, we’ve been keeping up to date with our social media
feeds. We’ve been watching YouTube videos and checking
Tik Tok …………on our phones.

In today’s world, our phones are our lifeline and our connection with everything.

Imagine a very user-friendly application for your phone. It is easy
to use and keeps all your records in one place. It automatically
does all your conversions. It speaks to you in pounds or
kilograms, US gallons or Imperial gallons and even liters if you’re
so inclined. It gives you access to tried and tested recipes at the
touch of a button, and it allows you to share your favorite recipes
with others with the touch of a button.

It is developed by a distiller for distillers….what more could you
want.

If you would like to try this application, and if you would like to
become a Beta-tester and put your suggestions and requirements
forward for inclusion in the ongoing development, you’re in the
right place.
You can take out a 7-day free trial for The ABV Society and become a beta tester. check it out https://www.skool.com/abv-society/about
