Tiny Hoopers Take the Court at the REC Gym! 🏀

Fort Stockton’s Winter Basketball season tipped off tonight with the youngest athletes stealing the spotlight! Pre-K squads — the Rockets, Lakers, Slipe “N” Slide, and Net Ninjas — brought big energy, bigger smiles, and some unforgettable first baskets at the Recreation Center Gym.

Even as leadership and financial planning continue behind the scenes, the REC's winter program is off and running - and the spirit of play is clearly alive and well.

📌Continued coverage of Fort Stockton Recreation — including updates from this week's pivotal board meeting and the selection of a new director - will be featured in next week's newspaper and shared on this page soon.

Just days after residents began asking why local parks weren’t decorated for Christmas, Commissioner Chavez has launched a new “Christmas in Rooney Park” community light-display project. Registration is open now — let’s light up the park together this holiday season! 🎄

𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲𝘇 𝗟𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗮𝘀 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝗽𝘂𝘁

Just four days after a lively Facebook conversation questioning why local parks aren’t decorated for Christmas, Precinct 2 Commissioner Jerome Chavez has announced a brand-new community project: “Christmas in Rooney Park,” a public light-display initiative inviting families, businesses, and organizations to help illuminate one of Fort Stockton’s most-visited spaces for the holiday season.

The discussion began when residents began reflecting on past traditions — decorated islands along city streets, wooden cutouts, arch lights at Rooney Park, and the once-annual community walk-through displays that drew crowds during December. As more community members chimed in with ideas, the thread quickly grew into a larger conversation about revitalizing holiday spirit in public spaces.

Many noted how surrounding cities create seasonal attractions that draw both residents and visitors. Several pointed to Odessa’s Starbright Village, Pecos’ Deck-A-Tree, and small-town drive-through light parks across West Texas. Others remembered Fort Stockton’s own earlier displays and stressed that the community has the resources and creativity to do the same again — if people are willing to work together.

Local residents also offered personal help throughout the conversation. Welders volunteered labor. Families pledged to sponsor materials. Teachers and artists mentioned that student groups could help paint or construct displays. Others expressed willingness to decorate individual trees, lampposts, or themed areas if given the opportunity.

Security and maintenance concerns were raised as well, with some pointing out the need for cameras, after-hours monitoring, or coordinated upkeep. But the overwhelming tone of the discussion was hopeful — a shared interest in bringing back holiday charm and creating a festive environment for families.

Commissioner Chavez responded to the momentum by officially releasing Christmas in Rooney Park: Light Display Guidelines, inviting the public to build and display their own 4' x 4' decorated signs throughout the back section of the park.

According to the guidelines, participants may create signs from plywood or coroplast, use LED lights only, and are responsible for maintaining their installation throughout the season. Electricity will be available, and each participant may use one outlet or a power strip if needed. Political displays are not permitted, and all forms must be turned in to the Precinct 2 office at 107 N. Hwy 285.

The registration deadline is December 12 at 4 p.m., and all signs must be installed by December 17. The county plans to celebrate the new displays with a community event on December 18.

For many residents, the quick turnaround from online discussion to official action is a welcome step toward restoring a long-missed tradition. With businesses, families, and creative volunteers already expressing interest, Rooney Park could soon begin a new chapter of holiday celebration — one shaped directly by the people of Fort Stockton.

As the project moves forward, the community’s response over the next two weeks will determine how large this first year’s display becomes. But based on the early engagement, there is no shortage of holiday spirit willing to rise to the occasion.

Fort Stockton had its own little showdown Saturday.
Gunslingers rolled into town, the outlaws caused trouble in the street, and the sheriffs weren’t far behind. All reenacted right between the Annie Riggs Memorial Museum and the Grey Mule Saloon multiple times throughout the day for onlookers that gathered on the porch of the museum.

Alongside the shootouts and Ole West Gunfighters, visitors also enjoyed book signings inside the museum, adding another layer of history and storytelling to Annie Riggs’ 70th anniversary and her 167th birthday celebration block party.

A lively throwback that made downtown Fort Stockton feel like the Old West all over again.

Peggie Gene Sharp Yeary
January 21, 1934 - November 8, 2025

Peggie Gene Sharp Yeary passed from this life with family and friends by her side, peacefully and from natural causes, and was finally reunited with our dad on Saturday, November 8, in Fort Stockton, Texas.

She had completed 91 years on this earth, born in Sonora, Texas on January 21, 1934, to Jonnie Mae Adams and Quinn Milton Sharp. Peggie was the younger sibling to her sister, Joyce Sharp Copeland, who left this earth February 27, 2023.

Peggie spent her younger years in Crane, Texas and graduated from Crane High School in 1952. She went on to Sul Ross State University to graduate with a double major in Biology and Education. Peggie finished out her formal education when she taught school by day and commuted to Alpine at night to obtain a Master's degree in Guidance and Counseling from Sul Ross State University.

Peggie met the love of her life, William (Bill) Newton Yeary, while they were both attending Sul Ross State University. Bill and Peggie were married on their graduation day, May 20, 1956. After a brief adventure in Fort Collins, Colorado, Bill and Peggie moved to Fort Stockton and ultimately raised their 5 children, Billy, Cliff, Beverly, Quinnetta, and Jonette.

Peggie was an elementary school teacher for 30 years in Fort Stockton, teaching English and Reading, and also taught adult education classes to English learners while utilizing her second language, Spanish. In the process, she educated between 2500-3000 children and adults. Peggie was always proud to share, "If the children learned anything in my class, they learned manners".

Peggie loved to travel and took many trips, mostly to Fort Davis in the Winnebago with Bill. She was happiest when her children, grand, great and fur children, were around. Her travels encompassed many states and countries, including Alaska, Honduras, Scotland, England, Ireland, France, Netherlands, Switzerland, and Italy.

She and Bill attended many sports, choir, band, and other countless activities for their children, grandchildren and people they loved.

Peggie was preceded in death by her husband Bill (79) with 54 years of marriage, son Billy (36), sister Joyce Copeland and brother-in-law Bob, parents Quinn and Jonnie Sharp, great grandson Bradley Sandberg (4), nieces Julia Copeland and Penny Phillips, and nephews Craig Phillips, Thad Phillips, and Frank Phillips.

Peggie is survived by 4 of her children, Cliff Yeary and Angie Phoenix of Sublette, Kansas, Beverly and Brian Olsen of Fort Stockton, Quinnetta Yeary and Kelley Lands of Red Rock, Texas, and Jonette Jeter of San Angelo, Texas, her nieces Cindy Carthel and Don, Aliene Theis and John, and Kathy Mullinax, her grandchildren Whitney Lowther and Kaveh Arabfakhry, Dr. Shelbey Bauman and Dan, Travis Olsen, Meghan Sandberg and Ian, and Sam Jeter and great grandchildren Cameron Bauman, Lily and Daisy Sandberg, her childhood and best friend Jessie Adams, other extended family, and lastly, her fur children Harry and Penny.

Peggie struggled with dementia and her last years were made tolerable by the constant care given by her daughters and her long-time care giver and friend, Della Rodriguez. Della will always hold a special place in our hearts and is now a part of our family.

Peggie was generous, almost to a fault, and would have given her last dollar or last meal to those in need. She was always trying to feed people, no matter what time of day or night, so it is with this in mind that the family asks, in lieu of flowers, to please donate any type of contribution you would like to make in her name, to the Food Bank/Pantry of your choice.
