âThis isnât working anymore, Sarah,â he said flatly. âIâm done living like this.â
She blinked at him, confusion and exhaustion etched into her face. âLike what? Supporting your family? Caring for your sick daughter?â
His jaw tightened. âLike drowning. You donât get it â youâre chasing contracts that never come through. Weâre broke. Weâre stuck. I have an opportunity now â a real one.â

Her heart dropped. âVictoria Chen,â she whispered.
Daniel looked away. âMarcus Chen offered me a VP position. His daughter believes in my potential. Sheâshe gets me, Sarah.â
Sarahâs voice broke. âYou mean she has money.â
He didnât deny it.
In that moment, Sarah understood: the man she had built a life with â the man she had supported through every failed venture â was walking out on her and their seven-year-old daughter battling leukemia to chase a mirage of wealth.
âEmma needs you,â she said softly.
âEmma needs stability,â Daniel snapped. âAnd I canât give her that with you dragging us down.â
He signed the papers that afternoon â terminating both his marriage and his parental rights.
