Armed Person/Mental Health Crisis

Fort Walton Beach, FL – Officers with the Fort Walton Beach Police Department successfully de-escalated a potentially dangerous situation involving an armed military veteran experiencing a mental health crisis at 29 Miracle Strip Parkway SW.

Reports were received of a person sitting in his vehicle with a r***e and wearing body armor. Upon arrival, Officers encountered an individual wearing tactical equipment, body armor, and possessing multiple fi****ms, including an AR-15-style r***e, several hundred rounds of am******on and multiple handguns. During negotiations, the individual made several concerning statements indicating emotional distress and potential suicidal intentions.

An officer on scene who is also a veteran established a personal connection with the individual through their shared military background. Using patience and effective de-escalation techniques, the officer was successful in having the individual peacefully surrender without incident or injury. The subject was subsequently assisted in obtaining a mental health evaluation and access to appropriate resources.

This incident highlights the importance of crisis intervention training, effective communication, and the dedication of Fort Walton Beach Police officers to preserving life. The Fort Walton Beach Police Department remains committed to protecting the community while ensuring individuals experiencing mental health crises are treated with dignity, compassion, and respect.
