Doulas are advocates for our clients. This frequently misunderstood term can spark strong reactions on both sides, so let's unpack what it looks like for me to advocate for a birthing mother.
Advocacy is foundational to doula support. It doesn't mean speaking over others, causing conflict, or taking control. At its heart, advocacy means upholding your voice, your values, and your choices.
My first priority as an advocate is to understand you. Your hopes, your boundaries, your cultural and personal preferences, and your birth vision are inform what you desire from me as your doula. I come alongside you during pregnancy to prepare for your birth in a way that reflects your unique needs.
As your doula, I don't make decisions for you - I support you in using your voice. I hold space for your choices and ensure that you feel respected. My role is steady and calm, especially when things feel intense. Advocacy means standing beside you, so your birth reflects what matters most to you. I am not afraid to use my voice to echo what you desire and maintain the safety of your experience.
I aim to maintain a peaceful, collaborative atmosphere in the birth room. Advocacy does not look like causing conflict. It means providing a grounding presence oriented to the laboring mother's wishes. I believe in mutual respect, clear communication, and building trusting relationships with medical staff.
Sometimes birth brings pressure, urgency, or unexpected turns. In those moments, my calm, steady presence helps ground you. Advocacy might look like pausing for informed consent, explaining what's happening, or simply reminding you: This is still your birth.
True advocacy isn't combative or aggressive. It's intentional, compassionate, and rooted in respect for your autonomy. When I advocate for you, I am a guardian for the space where your voice leads the way, so you can birth with clarity, confidence, and peace.
