As a doula, my hands are my most-used tool. My hands mean comfort, counter-pressure, a gentle caress of encouragement, a grounding touch as you go beyond what felt possible.

I've been reflecting on the care I give lately. Last month, after a particularly heavy birth, I found myself in my church, praying with the psalms that are a part of routine. Psalm 90:17 says, "Let the favor of the Lord be upon us; give success to the work of our hands, give success to the work of our hands."

These words spoke to me so deeply in a new way. The moments when I find myself repeating them, I am often silently praying for things to go "right" - whatever my version of right is in that instance. I want the works of my hands to succeed. But that day, with swirling thoughts about births that had dramatically shifted, and other pieces of my life that felt unclear, I looked up and caught sight of the cross.

It was as if peace flooded over me, as I was drawn to the hands of Christ, nailed to the cross. My own prayer, "Give success to the work of my hands," was answered there, in a moment but in eternity. Christ's work, the work of His hands, is finished on the cross. Salvation, redemption, healing, all completed in the suffering Lord. So, let the hands of Christ be the hands whose work succeeds in me.

(I've been ruminating on whether to write this post for a while, because it feels so vulnerable to unveil a bit of my interior world. I don't often share these moments, but this life of faith is the foundation to the care I provide.)

Home visits are so beautiful. I always prioritize meeting my clients in their homes for their prenatal appointments, because I believe I give you the best support when I truly know you in your space. Your home is where you relax and get comfortable. You're the most yourself in a space that belongs to you, and it feels safe to dig deep into your hopes, your worries, and how birth will shape you.

This is my favorite season for home visits because of the beautiful fall views I see on the way!

When the eyes of everyone else are elsewhere, my eyes are always on you. As your doula, I always listening to your breath, and guiding you from a place of peace. In the intensity, my presence is calm as I provide the support. They say the veil between heaven and earth is thinnest during birth, and I am there with you in that middle space, keeping you grounded while lifting you up.

Each labor unfolds as its own story, and no two journeys are ever the same. In this sacred work, intuition is our compass. Every technique, every counterpressure, every touch is guided not by routine, but by the rhythm of the laboring woman and the wisdom she holds.

Supporting families through that flow, grounded, attuned, and responsive, is where the true art of doula care lives.

What an honor to witness and support a powerful VBAC yesterday! I could not be more proud of this mom. There is no other role in the birth space quite like a doula’s. I am not the one doing assessments, charting progress, or making medical decisions. My role is simpler, and deeper. I hold mothers. With hands that soothe and ground, with touch that nurtures and reassures, I will remind you that you are not alone. My presence creates a steady rhythm of care in the midst of the intensity. I'm there to witness, to comfort, and to support as you bring your baby into your arms.
