Everybody wants a brand that looks expensive until it’s time to stop putting every damn thing on the flyer. 😭

Baby, the address does not need a spotlight. The phone number does not need a glow. The Instagram handle does not need to be fighting the event title for custody of my eyeballs. Good design knows what deserves attention first, what can whisper, & what can sit its ass in the corner until somebody actually needs it. Everything cannot be the main character. 💁🏽‍♀️🥴

The internet has convinced people that everything they can recognize, they can recreate. 😭

You see a cute flyer & suddenly it’s “I could make that.” You see somebody’s branding & it’s “that’s easy.” You see a logo & now we’re discussing how it’s “just words.” Baby, recognizing the finished product is not the same thing as knowing why 47 tiny decisions are keeping that mf from looking homemade. 😂 That’s like eating macaroni & deciding you understand what somebody’s auntie did in that kitchen. You tasted the result. You were not present for the ministry. 🤷🏽‍♀️🤣

Being a graphic designer is basically getting paid to notice s**t I wish I could unsee. 🥴🤣

I can be minding my business scrolling Facebook & suddenly I’m staring at a flyer wondering why the address is fighting for its life in 7-point font. 😭 I’m not even judging the business because regular people are not supposed to know every little thing I know about design. But my brain absolutely clocks hierarchy, spacing, readability, presentation & whether something actually makes me want to keep looking. There is no turning it off either. I’ve accepted my fate. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Your business can be small without LOOKING like you just started it yesterday. 🥴😭

That’s one thing I’m always thinking about when I design. You may still be building, figuring s**t out & doing everything yourself, but your customer doesn’t need to see the growing pains every time your business pops up on their timeline. Your visuals should make what you’re building feel established enough to trust, interesting enough to remember & intentional enough to spend money with. That’s the kind of work I create at Ashes Graphics. 🩷

Dallas really had its own sound, its own look & its own era. You had to be there. 😮‍💨

Designing this MO3 memorial wasn’t about putting a picture on a flyer & calling it tribute art. I wanted you to look at it & immediately feel Dallas before you even read everything on it. The skyline, the city references, the people connected to the story, the textures, the darker mood… all of it had a reason for being there. And I already know the MO3 listeners got opinions, so f**k the polite design critique for a second 😂

What’s the FIRST song you hear in your head when you see this? 🧡

Your flyer ain’t ugly. Everybody just got to put their two cents in it. 😭

“Make the logo bigger.”
“Can you add another picture?”
“Put this in red.”
“I think this font should be bigger too.”

Whole time the flyer somewhere fighting for its f**king life. 😂

Designers… what’s the ONE client request that immediately lets you know the flyer is about to become a group project? 👀

It’s weird grieving somebody you never met because somehow… they were still part of your life. 🌹

Hayden Panettiere was one of those faces that kept showing up in different chapters. Maybe you remember the little girl from Remember the Titans. Maybe it was Claire in Heroes. Maybe Juliette in Nashville. You watched her grow up while you were growing up too, & now all those old scenes hit completely different. That’s what I wanted this tribute to feel like. Not just a memorial, but that strange moment when somebody’s passing unlocks memories of who you were when you first watched them. 🕊️

What’s the FIRST role you think of when you see Hayden? 💕

Nipsey been gone seven years & people still talk about what he was BUILDING. That says more than any chart ever could. 💙🏁

That’s what always separated Nipsey Hussle for me. I love the music, but the music was never the only thing that made me pay attention. It was the ownership, the long game, the way he talked about building something that could keep moving without you standing there to carry it. That’s why I designed this birthday tribute the way I did. Crenshaw had to be in it. The blue had to feel heavy. The Marathon had to be bigger than a phrase slapped across a graphic. I wanted the design to feel like legacy, because seven years later, people are still listening, quoting him, studying how he moved & building from things he talked about while he was here. 🏁

What’s one Nipsey song, interview or piece of advice that STILL sticks with you? 💙
