Clara Smithโ€™s โ€œ๐˜พ๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™›๐™ž๐™™๐™–๐™ฃ๐™ฉโ€ wins PHJ 60th Anniversary Cover Art Contest ๐ŸŽจ

A beautiful tovero mare and her cowgirl partnerโ€”painted by artist Clara Smithโ€”rose to the top of the Paint Horse Journalโ€™s 60th Anniversary Cover Art Contest. As the winning artist Clara Smithโ€™s โ€œConfidantโ€ will grace the Winter issue of the Paint Horse Journal as the storied APHA flagship publication embarks on its sixth decade dedicated to showcasing the stories and spirit of the American Paint Horse and the people who love them.

Clara is a Western artist and graphic designer from Bend, Oregon, and a self-professed horse girl that never grew out of the โ€œphase.โ€ She strives to document real Western life, depicting the culture and traditions of the American West, while also maintaining authenticity within her work by including real people and real horses, set in real places.

โ€œThis piece features my aunt, late Western Artist Joelle Smith, on her first Paint Horse Millie. My aunt raised many Paint Horses and taught me how to ride,โ€ Clara wrote in her submission. โ€œHorses were the most important part of her life, and her love of horses and art inspired me to become the artist I am today. This piece reflects her fondness and gratitude for her Paint partner.โ€

The Winter 2026 Paint Horse Journal marks the publicationโ€™s 60th anniversary; its first issue rolled off presses in November-December 1966. The Journalโ€™s early issues often featured art covers that depicted Paint Horses and the Western lifestyle.

โ€œOur team decided an open-call art contest was the perfect way to celebrate the Paint Horse Journalโ€™s 60th anniversary,โ€ Editor Jessica Hein said. โ€œWe were blown away by the submissions we received from across the globe, both in technique and the way the artists captured the spirit of the American Paint Horse and its role in Western culture.โ€

The contest received 57 submissions, including entries from the U.S., Canada, France, the Netherlands and Peru. Choosing a winner amongst the salty field was challenging. Claraโ€™s piece, however, rose to the top.

โ€œFrom a creative perspective, I found this piece of artwork visually balanced. I loved the color palette used in the background, as it allowed the horse and rider to easily be the focus of the piece,โ€ APHA Creative Director Jody Johnson said. โ€œDetails throughout, along with the accuracy of horse and rider composition, make this a stand-out piece that captures Western spirit in a calm, confident way.โ€

In addition to having her artwork featured on the cover of the Winter 2026 Paint Horse Journal, Clara receives a $500 cash prize, an artist profile and social media showcase. Her artwork will be featured in a limited-edition PHJ x PH Barn Door t-shirt collection, as well.

โ€œIโ€™m so incredibly honored to have my piece selected for the cover,โ€ Clara said. โ€œHaving grown up with Paint Horses, they hold a special place in my heart. I may be biased having two Paint Horses myself, but they are my favorite breed to paint. This painting holds a lot of meaning for me, and having my Aunt Joelle featured on the cover through my work feels like a collaboration despite her not being here.โ€

Kurt Crawford has been named as CEO for APHAโ€™s family of brands ๐ŸŽ‰

After an extensive candidate search and careful consideration, Kurt Crawford was selected as the American Paint Horse Associationโ€™s chief executive officer, effective immediately. Taking the reins of the worldโ€™s second-largest equine breed association, Kurt will lead the non-profit American Paint Horse Association, its wholly owned for-profit subsidiary Marked For Greatness Properties LLC, and the charitable American Paint Horse Foundation.

Kurt has a lifetime of experience in the equine industry, both personally and professionally. He joined the APHA team in 2017 as director of business development. Under his guidance, Kurt more than doubled the associationโ€™s presence among corporate partners and sponsors, with sponsorship revenue now exceeding over $1 million annually. Among other duties, Kurt was instrumental in developing Marked For Greatness Propertiesโ€™ privately owned events, which include the Red Steagall Cowboy Gathering and The Cowgirl Gathering. Previously, Kurt served as executive director of the Pacific Coast Cutting Horse Association, senior sales executive at the National Cutting Horse Association and in other executive leadership roles.

โ€œOn behalf of the Board of Directors, we are thrilled to welcome Kurt Crawford as CEO of APHA. His leadership, industry insight and collaborative approach make him exceptionally well-suited to guide the association as we continue to refine our strategic priorities and deliver meaningful value to our members,โ€ APHA President Mike Holloway said. โ€œWe look forward to working closely with Kurt as we shape an innovative and sustainable future for APHA.โ€

A multimillion-dollar international organization, APHA is headquartered in the historic Fort Worth Stockyards. There, more than 10 million annual visitors from around the world experience Western culture and gain firsthand exposure to Paint Horse via the association and its larger-than-life โ€œLegacy of Colorโ€ bronze statues on Mule Alley. Kurt will continue driving APHAโ€™s mission of promoting, preserving and providing meaningful experiences with Paint Horses, while expanding the associationโ€™s global influence and presence.

โ€œI am truly honored to serve as CEO of the American Paint Horse Association and to work alongside such a talented and passionate team,โ€ Kurt said. โ€œI would like to thank the APHA Board of Directors for providing me with the opportunity to lead such an innovative organization. APHA has built an incredible foundation, and I look forward to refining our strategic direction while introducing new, innovative opportunities that strengthen engagement and deliver lasting value for our members.โ€
