We are proud of Val Baker and Retropep!

Val Baker didn’t let a turn of bad luck stop her from
competing at the Art of the Cowgirl in the World’s Greatest Horsewoman. The Nebraska rancher and retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel simply pivoted to ride her tried-and-true partner, Retropep. The 25-year-old Paint carried her to a score in all four events and they finished 49th out of 89 riders! Thanks to our sponsor Montana Silversmiths for bringing you her story! #itscooltobecowgirl

#MarkedForGreatness the incomparable Gunner is now NRHA - National Reining Horse Association's all-time leading sire.
#painthorse

It was 24 years ago when Gunner, then an unknown floppy-eared sorrel with a white tail, was guided into the Jim Norick Coliseum in Oklahoma City by NRHA Professional Clint Haverty to compete at the 1996 NRHA Futurity. By the time the go-rounds were over, he had grabbed everyone’s attention by claiming the Open L4 Futurity Reserve title and the hearts of reining fans everywhere.

When Andrea Fappani won the 2020 NRHA Open L4 Futurity on All Bettss Are Off (Gunner x Wimpys Little Chic), the historic $250,000 first place check catapulted legendary sire Gunner to the top spot of both the NRHA All-Time Leading Sire and 2020 NRHA Leading Sire lists.

Rodrigo Nieves Pilots Tagin Stiletto Chics to L1 Open Co-Championship

Rodrigo Nieves has never made the finals at the NRHA Futurity, but he qualified all three of his entries back to compete on Saturday. To top off an already exciting day, Nieves piloted Tagin Stiletto Chics to a 217.5 to tie for the L1 Championship, and finish in a three-way tie for the L2 Reserve Championship.

“We came here, and the first two runs weren’t like we expected, but today’s run was really good, and we are grateful for that,” he shared. In the first go, he and Tagin Stilleto Chics marked a 216.5, but followed that with a 214 in the semi-finals for a 430.5 composite.

Tagin Stiletto Chics is by Gunners Special Nite, unofficially an NRHA Four Million Dollar Sire, and out of Stiletto Tag. “I like how honest he is. He is super honest and a special show horse,” Nieves said of the c**t.

In addition to a paycheck of $8,959, Nieves was presented with a saddle from Bob’s Custom Saddles, a Montana Silversmith’s trophy buckle, Anderson Bean boots, Classic Equine product, a Platinum Performance gift certificate, a Bluebonnet Feeds gift certificate, a SmartPak gift card, one stomach scope from Dr. Joe Carter and Oklahoma Equine Hospital, a Shorty’s Caboy Hattery certificate, and a garment bag from Brandt Blankets.

Tagin Stilleto Chics is owned and nominated by Jennifer Marley. “Duane Latimer started to ride the horse, and then gave me the opportunity to ride him in Ardmore at the Futurity there,” Nieves said, referring to the Southwest Reining Horse Association Futurity, where he and Tagin Stiletto Chics claimed the reserve title for Levels 1 and 2. “I thank Duane Latimer, the owner, the team at XCS Ranch, my wife and daughter, and my family in Uruguay.”

Although originally from Uruguay, Nieves spent 10 years in Brazil, where he got his start with reining horses before moving to the United States. He has worked for Duane Latimer for a year and a half.

In addition to Tagin Stiletto Chics, Nieves qualified Alphasushienterprize (owned by Fernando Botteon) and Theoneyourelookinfor (owned by Eduardo Salgado) back to the L1 Open Futurity Finals.

Sebastian Petroll Wins L3 & L2 Open Championships Riding Dunit The Walla Way

Sebastian Petroll, of Whitesboro, Texas, says he’s grateful to show a horse with as much try as Dunit The Walla Way. Petroll and the big-hearted filly won both the NRHA Futurity L3 and L2 Open Championships thanks to their score of 218.5. They also finished 12th in the Open L4 Finals for combined total earnings of $53,879. Owned and nominated by Ellen Lloyd Cummins, Dunit The Walla Way is by NRHA Three Million Dollar Sire Walla Walla Whiz and out of Dunit The Gunner Way.

“We bought her mother several years ago,” Petroll said. “Her owner, Ellen Cummins, and I both showed her. It’s always fun when you are part of the whole process with a horse.”

Petroll says Dunit The Walla Way is a horse that he can always depend on to perform.

“She has a heart that I don’t know how it fits into her little body,” he said. “She is so kind and she always wants to be with you. You can count on her 100 percent of the time. That’s what makes her so special; that paired with some obvious talent, but mentally she is just very special.”

Petroll’s plan for the preliminary round was to make a safe run that was enough to get to the Open L4 semi-finals, sponsored by Not Ruf At All & Tamarack Ranch, which he accomplished handily with a 219.5. His aim was similar for the semi-finals. “I knew if I could finish in the upper half that I should be fine, so I tried not to use up my horse. In the Finals I just tried to get as good of a run together as I could, and it worked.”

With all the uncertainly in 2020, Petroll says he is happy that the Futurity went on uninterrupted.

“It means everything to get to show here, not just for me personally, but it’s very important that we were able to have the event for the sake of the entire industry,” Petroll said.

He is also thankful for Dunit The Walla Way’s owner, Cummins, who has been a client with him for more than a decade.

“She’s just been amazing. She’s a pleasure to work with and very important to our program. We can only do this because of all our great owners,” Petroll said, adding, “Also, my wife Melanie, she rode this horse for big stretches during her 2-year-old year. Without her I couldn’t do this.”

For the L3, Petroll received a Bob’s Custom Saddle sponsored by Glycoguard. For the L2, Petroll was presented with a Bob’s Custom Saddle sponsored by Arcese Quarter Horses. For both the L3 and L2 championship, Petroll won a Montana Silversmith’s trophy buckle, Anderson Bean boots, Classic Equine product, a Platinum Performance gift certificate, a Bluebonnet Feeds gift certificate, a SmartPak gift card, one stomach scope from Dr. Joe Carter and Oklahoma Equine Hospital, a Shorty’s Caboy Hattery certificate, and a garment bag by Brandt Blankets.

All Bettss Are Off & Andrea Fappani WIN the 2020 NRHA - National Reining Horse Association Futurity Level 4 Open Championship.

When they marked the winning 225, All Bettss Are Off became the third, that’s right, the THIRD NRHA Futurity Level 4 Open Champion out of the great mare Wimpys Little Chic.

With tonight's win, the son of Colonels Smoking Gun (Gunner) joined his older half siblings – 2011 co-champion ARC Gunnabeabigstar (by Gunnatrashya) and 2015 Champion Shesouttayourleague (by Walla Walla Whiz) -- in taking home the sport’s biggest prize.

The $250,000 first-place check the stallion earned tonight for his owner-breeder, Arcese Quarter Horses USA, will push Wimpys Little Chic over the $1 million mark in produce earnings.

Congrats to the Fappani & Arcese Quarter Horses teams on this great accomplishment!

For Julie Lewis, every day spent with her family and her horses is a gift. The horsewoman from Hollywood, Maryland, has battled through breast cancer treatment since October 2018, beating the disease in February 2020—she’s been cancer-free for six months, so far. In celebration and in an effort to live everyday to the fullest, she made plans attend the 2020 APHA Eastern National Championships in Viginia with her homebred 2020 sorrel solid filly Ima Toys R Us Kid and her 2019 palomino solid mare Shiners Chex Mix.

“My motivation has been my breast cancer and knowing tomorrow isn’t promised,” Julie said. “I have goals for next year, and I feel this filly could show at the World level next year, so why not go [to this show] and have an experience of a lifetime?”

Showing Ima Toys R Us Kid is extra special for Julie and her husband, Paul—the couple bred “Reba,” who is sired by their 26-year-old homebred stallion CC Great Zann Pine. He has just a handful of foals—they’ve been selective in the mares to whom he has been bred—and they’re excited about the filly’s future, first in halter and later as a riding horse.

In the show ring, Reba’s all business—she seems to know she’s in there to do her job, Julie says. Even though the mare is young, she showed like a veteran for Julie, earning third in Amateur Solid Paint-Bred 2 & Under Mares before clinching the national championship title in Open Solid Paint-Bred 2 & Under Mares.

“I’ve got a lot to learn. Every time I go in the pen, I learn something new,” Julie said. “I know we have a lot to work on, but we’re going to get there. I think you’ll hear her name in the future!”

It was a proposal to remember at the 2020 Eastern National Championships for Amanda Hutchinson and Chipper Riley!

“Horses are obviously a huge part of her life, and I think she always wanted it to be at a show in the ring. So I did what I could to make it happen the way she wanted it to,” Chipper said.

Completely blindsided by the proposal, Amanda grinned through happy tears and enthusiastically said ‘Yes,’ wrapping her arms around Chipper as the arena—including a legion of barn mates from Breakaway Performance Horses—erupted in cheers. So while she might not have left with the champion’s trophy, Amanda definitely was the day’s biggest winner overall, with a diamond ring on her finger and new fiance by her side.

Shoutout to Madison for goals met at the Western National Championships!

As the first day of the APHA Western National Championship Show ended, Madison Wojcek’s own personal celebration was just beginning. The 15-year-old equestrian from Bremerton, Washington, and her mare, A Lady With Assets, swept the national championship in Youth Hunt-Seat Equitation 18 & Under, the final class of the day—and with that trophy, Madison has already met one of her goals for the whole show.

“I just wanted to place well at this show, especially in the classes I enjoy, like equitation,” Madison said. “So, this feels so awesome! All of our hard work has paid off, and I’m insanely proud of ‘Holly.’ ”

Recovery is possible and often we are the only voice that can ask for help. #notturningaroundtosmile #secretsout the short and sweet version I am an alcoholic (who has recovered from a hopeless state of mind and body1-27-18 )who was raised by the founder of L.E.A.R.N horse rescue. I found seven horses and couldn't find a facility that would take them all. Most wouldn't have survived the summer in the dehydrated state they were in. My mother couldn't take on 7 horses because of a total knee replacement. left with not many choices I deemed the project impossible. The wonderful author (@Anne Flint) that I live with came to me one night and said. "what if you could do something with the horses and your recovery community." The stars aligned, the angels and stuff aligned or whatever. Then the road out of hell began for 7 unassuming and at times combative horses. Some had reverted into being somewhat feral but that soon changed. We are learning to live literally one step at a time. Together, as the physical recovery turned the corner we got to meet the personalities of some rather bitchy old girls and one moody gelding. like me their best behavior most likely got them in their situations. Unlike me they hadn't all been taught early on how to behave. It's a weird crazy Journey." Trudging the road of happy destiny" For more of our story and to watch it unfold please visit our Facebook LEARN to live #secretsout All seven have current negative coggins Teeth Floated U.T.D Farrier work started (desperately need a good farrier locally) Most have made miraculous recoveries both physically and behaviorally The two "feral" (Alli and Tru) mares now stand for baths and any grooming along with coming when called instead of me having to corner them. The fair skinned paints accept their UV fly sheets every morning. Along with sunscreen and grooming. The rain rot has been treated and is manageable Everyone is growing hair in what was open sores and blisters. Alli and Tru are accepting ground driving and a ba****ck light saddle. (May be in foal the vet wasn't prepared for palpation when there) We need qualified homes We need support in the interim Everyone has made massive progress Vist Learnhorserescue.org for adoption info And volunteer info. Located in Greenwood SC Secret is learning simple tricks Everyone in some way is benefiting from sweat equity. I am trying to teach them skills that will further their chances of a forever home. Most can have jobs and all of them are working on improving. Grammar and spelling is what I am working on. Bare with me until our author comes back.
Hi , I don’t know if this is the correct place to ask a question but will and see if someone can send me in the direction. So here I go, I am starting to show my horse in halter and would like to do walk/trot to start but was told that my show boots have to be square toe or I would get points off and would like to know if this is correct and if so why?
