From 1931 - A cardboard Hit of the Week record featuring a well-known Depression-era "cheer up" song, plus a "bonus track" with a famous waltz from 1891 that, while pretty, is anything but cheerful.

From 1924 - Nice jazzy recording of a song quite popular in 1924. The generic-sounding "NML Dance Orchestra" credited on the label is, in fact, none other than Fletcher Henderson's band!

Background information about the recording can be found below the audio selection.   "Charley My Boy" N.M.L. Dance Orchestra (National Music Lovers 1097-B) circa July 1924     Here's a recording from the Edward Mitchell Collection, credited...

From 1930 - With such a provocative title as “You Have Become So Terribly Blonde Lately,” how could I resist giving this record a spin? It was NOT at all what I expected it might be. But it is a very enjoyable recording - and the flip side has a nice rendition of a song that became internationally famous and is still occasionally performed.

Background information about the recordings can be found below the audio selections.   "You Have Become So Terribly Blonde Lately" Dol Dauber's Dance Orchestra; Austin Egen, vocal (HMV B-5905 mx BW 3107) January 6,...

104 Years Old - Here are two recordings that will be celebrating their 104th birthdays in upcoming months. Musical styles changed very rapidly during the 1920s. After the Charleston craze exploded upon the scene a few years later, recordings like these were seen as being a bit quaint and old-fashioned, and not just because of the pre-microphone era acoustic recording technology. But I find many of the recordings from the very early years of the 1920s to be rather haunting, and they often retain a certain charm left over from the ragtime era, which was rapidly fading away.

Background information about the recordings can be found below the audio selections.   "Stolen Kisses" Casino Dance Orchestra (Pathe 020579-B)   "Julienne" Bennie Krueger And His Orchestra (Pathe 020579)   Here are two rather charming recordings from a 1921 Pathe Actuelle disc. "Stolen Kisses"...
