New York, 1922 - A very charming 1922 recording that, in some respects, is more reminiscent of the ragtime era of the previous decade than the early Jazz Age.

The recording features two of the more prolific early 1920s recording artists, bandleader Joseph Samuels and vocalist Arthur Fields. The now-obscure song, "November Rose," by the now-obscure composer Jack Snyder, was recorded by most other record labels as either a ballad or a waltz. But this recording, issued on both the Banner and Regal labels, features an arrangement in dance tempo as a happy, peppy fox trot which, combined with its beautiful melody, along with nice saxophone and xylophone solos, results in a very delightful performance.

New York, 1927 - Very catchy recordings of two songs from a musical written, directed, and produced by F. Scott Fitzgerald's wealthy neighbor, whose elaborate parties are thought to have provided inspiration for Fitzgerald's novel ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜Ž๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ต ๐˜Ž๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ด๐˜ฃ๐˜บ.

The recordings are by Max Fisher and his California Orchestra, a band that was very prominent on both American coasts in the 1920s but is largely forgotten even by vintage record and 1920s popular music enthusiasts - so much so that, when the blog posting was being prepared, a general overview of Fisher's life and career could not be located online. However, thanks to an abundance of information in period news articles and trade publications, this posting now provides such an overview.

The recordings, both of which are very enjoyable, can be heard by following the link in the first comment.

Los Angeles, 1937 - A very nice arrangement of a catchy tune from a film that flopped at the box office, performed by one of the most famous West Coast-based bands of the 1930s.

Our blog posting features an October 1937 recording of "You're My Dish" by Jimmie Grier and His Orchestra. Jimmie Grier's band quickly achieved national fame as a result its residency at two of the West Coast's hottest nightspots, the legendary Cocoanut Grove at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles and the Biltmore Bowl at the Los Angeles Biltmore.

Los Angeles and Oakland, California, 1924 - Two recordings by bands that are now mostly forgotten but which enjoyed significant fame during the early 1920s.

The featured audio restorations, which are among those included in this week's Radio Dismuke playlist update, bring us back to the pre-microphone era to highlight two fascinating bandleaders. First is Chicago-based Paul Biese, a pioneer of the "moaning saxophone" who was instrumental in making the once-obscure instrument a defining cultural symbol of the 1920s Jazz Age. You will hear his final recording, from a 1924 recording session in Los Angeles, made just a year before his tragic, untimely death at age 40.

Alongside Biese, we feature Henry Halstead, one of the most prominent West Coast bandleaders of the era. Famous for his regular radio broadcasts from San Francisco's St. Francis Hotel, Halstead's band would soon become known as the "Favorite Band of Movieland" and even appeared in one of the earliest sound-on-disc musical short films.

Chicago, 1926 - First two recordings Benny Moten's Kansas City Orchestra made for Victor. They were recorded in the acoustically amazing ballroom of Chicago's Webster Hotel. If you have ever been impressed by the audio quality of Jelly Roll Morton's early Victor recordings, it's because many of them were recorded in that same ballroom.
