My wife says she's very concerned that I am talking to myself a lot more lately. I told her not to worry. I only do it when I want an expert opinion.

The metamorphosis has taken much longer than I thought because our morph took a sharp turn once I realized that our old direction had become the wrong direction. As of August 1, 2020, we are PAOLO Communications and I am a full-time freelance writer. This where I started. And now, as I enter what is likely my last childhood, it is where I am happiest......and best suited because my strength has always been words. Wish me luck. And if you are looking for a (fill in the blank) writer look my way.

I am pleased to announce some exciting changes are coming to PAOLO. Starting in early 2020, we will morph into Seven Breaths Communications & Marketing, a lean agency that focuses on Authority-based PR & Marketing. We will be creating campaigns using digital, social and traditional media to promote our clients. But our emphasis will position them as pros, not prices. Hence the term Authority PR & Marketing. Stay tuned as we move toward this exciting, new chapter in our story.

I recently shared a thought on the LinkedIn platform about the importance of supporting small business in a world that is becoming increasingly centered on big box and online vendors. I am amazed at how many likes, comments, etc. it received.

I said that supporting local businesses is important because of the impact your purchase has on the owner and his/her family. The original piece mentioned the fact that your purchase might be the one that allows the owner to provide dance lessons for his daughter. And how those lessons will benefit her the rest of her life.

But as I thought about it, I thought that one other fact needs to be showcased. I used to be the Director of Communications for ProCuts. We had 64 franchisees with 204 shops in 12 states. A lot of locals saw the ProCuts name and assumed that it was a big, out-of-state business (vs. the local neighborhood barber shop).

It was usually just the opposite. The shops were really a local business using a national brand name. The owners were local, in most cases. They purchased from local vendors, paid rent to local landlords, and their payroll stayed in the community. On average, more than 60% of the funds they generated stayed in the community and supported other local businesses.

So when you're thinking about running errands, make a point to include at least one small business (franchise or otherwise) in your shopping because that's where your money directly benefits the business, the community and the lives that business supports and touches.

Wired Business has an interesting chart today on the geographic distribution of Facebook's vast user base (1.5 trillion). Ninety percent (1.35 billion) live OUTSIDE the US and Canada. Good to know when your social media types are touting Facebook as a main medium for targeting business owners and executives. When you're allocating time and money in social media, it's ALWAYS a question of quality over quantity.

New Year. New Logo. What a great way to start 2019!

The newly-released study on the most highly watched TV shows of 2018 is really interesting (and educational). It says 88 of the top 100 broadcasts were sports events. That's up from 81 in 2017. The NFL topped the list with 63 games. Smart marketers know how to tie into these events at the local and regional levels to generate high visibility with audiences without putting sky-high ads inside the broadcasts.

By the way, the 12 non-sports programs included 5 live events and 7 scripted shows. The top non-sports one (at # 11) was "This is Us". But that episode benefitted from airing right after the 2018 Super Bowl.

The University of North Carolina has penned a couple of new terms that have a true-but-frightening ring regarding the state of local journalism today: NEWS DESERTS, communities that are no longer served by daily journalists; and GHOST NEWSPAPERS, publications that have become a shadow of their former selves in terms of circulation and ambition.
