Happy National Pitbull Awareness Day!
In honor of all the pitties still fighting to be seen, heard, and loved, I wanted to share a little bit about why this movement means everything to me.
Wyatt came into our lives in 2014. We had just moved to Austin, TX and were wandering a local farmer’s market on the hunt for organic peaches, not a dog. We had promised ourselves we’d wait to adopt until life felt more settled. But there was an adoption booth, and I said, “Let’s just go love on the puppies.”
Amidst all the barking and excited little dogs, there he was... silent, trembling, but so gentle. All paws and long legs, a giant head pressed quietly into my hand. I looked at my boyfriend and whispered, “We can’t leave without him.”
Since that day, he’s been our greatest adventure. We’ve climbed mountains, swam in oceans, camped under stars… and now our adventures look more like slow mornings, soft blankets, and being home together. But the most meaningful part of our life together has been learning how to advocate.
Wyatt was abused before he found us. He was scared of everything & two full years passed before he trusted we were his safe place. I cried often, wondering if we were enough for him. But we never gave up, and one day, something shifted. He exhaled. He chose us.
His story isn’t rare. So many of you know what it’s like to love the broken, the misunderstood, the ones the world gave up on. It’s beautiful. It’s heartbreaking. And it changes you.
I couldn’t stay silent. I started fundraising in Austin to give back to the rescue that saved him. That small act became Wyatt’s Wish… and eventually, Barktivist Boutique.
Everything I do is because of him. Wyatt gave my life purpose, community, and the courage to fight for dogs like him.
I’m an advocate because of Wyatt. Because of you. And because millions of pitties are still waiting for someone to believe they’re worth fighting for too.
Happy Pitbull Awareness Day, friends. Let’s change the world... one pittie smile at a time. ❤️
