Housekeys

Housekeys Housekeys is the solo ambient project of Texas-born multi-instrumentalist and creative polymath, Tiffiny Costello.

Tiffiny has been playing music since she was in 1st grade, and has composing and performing as Housekeys since 2014 and uses mostly pianos, synths, keyboards, accented through effects pedals to create warm, mostly wordless, pieces. The inspiration for Tiffiny’s music is deeply rooted in emotion, melancholy, and chaos. She is heavily influenced by the neoclassical and avant-garde genres - i.e. Nils

Frahm, Hania Rani, Olafur Arnalds, Grouper, and Julianna Barwick. Her first introduction to this specific type of wordless music was in the early 2000s when Sigur Ros’ “()” had just come out and her then-boyfriend included one of their songs on a mix CD. She loves to create a feeling or emotional reaction with her music, more so than focusing solely on the arrangement or structure of the song. Her music is improvised most of the time, and often incorporates field sounds collected from various places, such as Iceland, the Cascades, and even the New York City Subway. Tape loops are also an evolving part of her production practices, and she even hosts a Tape Loop Project on her website, where musicians are invited to download and collaborate with a tape loop she created and recorded from an analog cassette tape. Tiffiny also performs live improvised underscores in collaboration with other artists - poets, dancers in real-time, and has also created a “Heartbreak Voicemail” project where visitors can plug their phones into her mixer, playing voice memos or recordings from loved ones who have passed away, while Tiffiny improvises music with the sounds others provide. Tiffiny has a full-length self-produced album set for a 2023 release, along with a full-length music film. The first single from her forthcoming album will be released on March 11, 2022.

Never would I have thought I’d be doing official research for LASP, much less studying the Van Allen Belts!

While I still have not nailed down a new full-time job, this is HUGE for where I’m trying to head with my studies of physics.

I am thrilled and can’t believe this came about after I forwarded my UTA planetarium show + shared my sonification work to someone at HARP (Heliophysics Audified: Resonances in Plasmas), who then introduced me to Dr. Lauren Blum at CU Boulder, who I will now be doing researching for.

If Hotel Sorrento’s new leadership team had not decided to restructure the entire sales/marketing dept back in March, effectively causing me to head into 7+ months of unemployment, with no severance after five years with the company (which has also caused a mountain of new debt), this wouldn’t be happening.

I probably wouldn’t even be in Colorado.

I wouldn’t have seen the aurora earlier this month.

I wouldn’t have seen the comet above a mountain valley.

I wouldn’t have hiked through the most beautiful fall colors I have ever seen.

Hindsight. 💛

I designed a 2025 calendar and it’s ready for ordering!!! This started as a “I’m unemployed and bored, so I guess I’ll doodle a bit,” hobby, but it’s now turned into the first release of what I imagine will be a line of “Cute Lil Pedals,” series. I have plans for sticker packs, decals, and all kinds of fun stuff.

All images were illustrated by me, and the layout was also designed by me. = the name of my design “studio,” or “agency...” I don’t know what to call it, but it’s where my design and art go.

To save costs up front, these are made to order by a 3rd party printing studio, but I hope to eventually find a local print shop to work with. If anyone knows of any let me know, otherwise go’on ahead and get yours and start the year with a new pedalboard. 😉

HOUSEKEYS IS THE MUSIC PROJECT OF SEATTLE-BASED ARTIST, TIFFINY COSTELLO.

Having played piano since 2nd grade, Tiffiny uses her classical knowledge of theory and performance + her love for painting and experimenting with sound to create ambient dreamscapes designed to leave space for feeling, thinking, drifting, and disappearing. Composing the most during dark periods of grief, depression, and hopelessness, Tiffiny uses music as a coping skill, an outlet.

There is space for everyone to feel anything in Tiffiny's music.
