A former Johnson County police officer claimed he possessed hundreds of photos and videos of children being s*xually abused because he was conducting a secret investigation, officials said.
The former police officer, Daniel Joseph Bates, will spend the rest of his life in prison after being convicted at trial this week, according to a statement from the Johnson and Somervell County District Attorney's Office.
Bates was caught when he tried to meet a 15-year-old girl for s*x, officials said. Who he actually met was a "civilian predator catcher" who had shared Bates' communications with the Texas Rangers and local agencies, according to the statement. A resulting search warrant uncovered that Bates possessed some 300 depictions of child s*xual abuse.
At trial, Bates claimed he possessed the materials because he was conducting a secret police investigation into human traffickers, officials said. He was a reserve officer for a small local agency and was working as highway construction security at the time of his arrest, according to the DA's office. Bates was sentenced to three consecutive life terms on charges of possessing the images, plus 40 years to be served concurrently on a charge of online solicitation of a minor, according to the statement.

A fire department bomb squad found no active threat after a person on Thursday morning reported to authorities that he placed five explosive devices inside Fossil Ridge High School in north Fort Worth.
The school was temporarily placed on a secure status as a precaution, a Fort Worth police spokesperson said. Operations have since resumed to normal at the school in the 4100 block of Thompson Road.
The bomb threat was made about 8:45 a.m.
A Keller school district spokesperson did not immediately respond to a reporter's request for information.

🚨 **OFFICER-INVOLVED INCIDENT IN RIVER OAKS**

On September 7, 2026, at approximately 9:28 p.m., River Oaks Police Department officers responded to the 900 block of Yale Street regarding a report involving a person in crisis.

Upon arrival, officers encountered an adult male. During the interaction, the man reportedly retrieved a handgun from inside the residence and returned to the front yard.

According to police, the man did not comply with officers’ verbal commands and subsequently pointed the handgun toward responding officers. Two officers discharged their fi****ms, striking the man.

Officers immediately secured the scene and provided emergency medical assistance until River Oaks Fire Department personnel arrived. The man was pronounced deceased at the scene.

No officers were physically injured during the incident.

The **Texas Rangers** and the **Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office Officer-Involved Shooting Team** have been notified and will conduct an independent investigation. The River Oaks Police Department will also conduct an internal administrative review.

The involved officers have been placed on standard paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation. Authorities are withholding the identities of the individual and involved officers at this time pending family notifications and preliminary investigative findings.
