Early 2000s Yu-Gi-Oh and 2020s Yu-Gi-Oh may as well be completely different card games. They just happen to share the same name for some reason.

One of the most frustrating parts about modern Yu-Gi-Oh's power creep in card design is that this game is nearly 30 years old, so there's no excuse for making the same "mistakes" in card design year after year. Konami knows exactly when a new card can easily bridge into a separate, powerful engine. And they should know that hand loops and hand peeking effects are unfair because they've already banned several of them. So to see them keep making these same kind of cards after they've proven to be problematic is what makes the conversation all so exhausting.

The local Skull Servants player (same guy who got back into Yu-Gi-Oh after 20 years) has actually been sticking with it, modifying his deck, and last night at locals he showed me his Starlight Rare Skull Servant he got in a trade. You'll even notice a Link Monster in the background (Flying Mary). It's good to know that there are players who can still get back into modern Yu-Gi-Oh!

Yu-Gi-Oh's new Magnificent Monsters set is finally here! It's got serialized Grandmaster Rare cards! Plus some much needed reprints! I have 6 boxes to open today, so let's see what we can pull!

I've been considering that modern Yu-Gi-Oh could actually benefit from having Skill Cards (like the ones from Duel Links/Speed Duel). Of course, it would take careful balancing and should mostly be used as a way to help the player going second. But I can definitely see effects like "Pot of Sloth" and "Dark Ruler No More" making for interesting skills. Not sure if it's a great idea, but what do you think?

Alec has been playing the Pumpking deck so I surprised him today with 3 copies of the Lost Art Call of the Haunted (where the tombstone is a cross, unlike the normal censored one). Perfect for his deck!
