Update on the drag boat incident Thursday night
The Northern Illinois Drag Boat Association (NIDBA) is providing an update following a racing incident that occurred on Thursday, August 7, 2025 at Blarney Island.
During a scheduled, sanctioned race, competitor Jeff Mattson was involved in an incident. He had all requisite safety equipment in place which functioned as designed allowing him to walk away. We have been in contact with Jeff and his son, Andrew, who are both members of our NIDBA family and are relieved to report that Jeff is in good spirits following emergency transport to a local hospital where he is currently under medical care and observation.
The NIDBA extends its deepest gratitude to the Blarney Island crew, the NIDBA’s own safety and volunteer teams, and the local first responders who were on the scene. Their swift and professional response was critical in ensuring Jeff’s well-being.
“Drag boat racing is an awesome sport, and with that comes risk. The safety of our racers is our top priority” said Chris Alby, president of the NIDBA. “This was a sanctioned NIDBA event, and all safety protocols were in place, with medical personnel and first responders on site. We are thankful for their immediate response and the incredible dedication of all of the volunteers, safety team, first responders, and our fellow NIDBA drivers and crew.”
The NIDBA and Blarney Island will be conducting a full review of the incident in accordance with our safety guidelines. We ask for privacy for Jeff Mattson and his family as he recovers. Further updates will be provided as they become available including how our broader NIDBA community can best support Jeff through his healing journey.
