Snow Hill and Memorial United Methodist churches held a Blessing of the Animal services.

The ceremonies are traditionally held on Oct. 4, the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, and celebrate the human-animal bond while recognizing animals as part of God’s creation.

As part of the service, the church leader reads: “God said, ‘Let the earth bring forth living creatures of every kind,’ and it was so – cattle, creeping things, and wild animals. The people respond, “And God saw that it was good. All creatures are part of God’s beautiful, diverse creation.”

Fog surrounded the Nikwasi Mound in downtown Franklin this morning.

On Thursday, Oct. 16, Moccasins Across America will visit the mound for a ceremony at noon offering prayers of healing and restoration.

The group has been traveling across the U.S. since May and will arrive in Washington, D.C. later this month. They say their purpose is “to sow prayers of forgiveness and repentance across America reaping the fruit of reconciliation and healing.”

In addition to the Nikwasi Mound, while in WNC they will visit the Spikebuck Town Mound in Hayesville, the Cherokee County Historical Museum in Murphy, Fields of the Woods, and sites in Robbinsville and Cherokee.
