Dear Franklin Water User,

To ensure that the Town of Franklin Water Department continues to provide the latest technology for effective water usage monitoring, we are transitioning our customer self-service platform.

Our current platform, WaterSmart, will be discontinued at the end of this month. We anticipate completing the transition to the new Neptune My360 Consumer Portal in early 2026.

The My360 portal will continue to offer essential features, including the ability to create usage alerts, set a water budget, and view consumption data 24/7. Please look out for future communications regarding the sign-up process for the My360 Customer Portal.

We thank you for your proactive approach to monitoring your water usage and encourage you to utilize the new My360 Customer Portal upon its launch.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me directly at 508-553-5500 or [email protected].

Thanks for continuing to care about your water use,

Doug Martin

Historic Happenings at the Franklin Historical Museum for January 2026

Through January, the SPECTACULAR, FRANKLIN IN MINIATURE CONTINUES ON DISPLAY

It took thousands of hours of research and precision modeling to create three large, models of the center of Franklin, circa 1932, clustered around the railroad tracks that connected the community to nearby towns and faraway cities. The models are an exact representation of the structures that once existed from just west of the present-day Del Carte Conservation land to beyond the present day Mill Store (image above).

The models include hundreds of structures in 1:87 scale (HO scale), tiny motor vehicles and people and an as yet unknown number of tiny pigeons(!), all modeled from photographs and architectural plans, where available, by master modeler Scott Mason.

For this special Free event (DONATIONS ENCOURAGED), the Museum will be open during its regular hours, 10-1 on Saturdays and 1-4 on Sundays and at other times by arrangement.

Sunday, Jan. 11 – The ‘Second Sunday Speaker Series’-- “Dissecting the Dioramas”

Award winning historian Joe Landry will begin the talk at 1:15 with a deep dive into the backstory of some of the important structures illustrated in 3D in the Franklin in Miniature exhibit. He will explore the history that is still visible as well as some of the prior structures and enterprises that had already been swept aside by ‘progress’ in 1932. The second part of the presentation will feature, master modeler, and historian, Scott Mason, discussing the painstaking effort that went into creating his exact models – both the research and the craft work.

January is Ben Franklin Month in Franklin, honoring his birth month, connections to Franklin and Diverse Interests and Accomplishments. Most of the events this year are at the Franklin Public Library

▪ The January Community Concert at Franklin United Methodist Church features Vera Meyer on the glass armonica, Sat. Jan 10, shortly after 1 pm. This event is co-sponsored by the Franklin Historical Museum with funding from the Franklin Cultural Council. What is a glass armonica? It is a musical instrument invented by, you guessed it, Ben Franklin! Free. Donations welcome.
Check out this short video by Ken Burns: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57-JQlwRDqc.

▪ Special Events for Adults--The Franklin Stove: An Unintended American Revolution, Saturday, Jan 10 at 4 pm. As part of the town’s annual Ben Franklin Month, Harvard Professor Joyce Chaplin will be at the Franklin Public Library to discuss her new book, The Franklin Stove: An Unintended American Revolution.

Kirkus Reviews said: "Historian Chaplin focuses on Benjamin Franklin’s multiple renditions of an innovative stove to examine the intersection of scientific inquiry, race, class, politics, and economics at a time of climate change and resource depletion―a period, she underscores, not unlike our own.”

This event at the Franklin Public Library is co-sponsored by the Franklin Historical Museum with funding from the Franklin Cultural Council.

▪ Special Events for All Ages--Live Reading of the Franklin Autobiography, Thursday, January 15 @ 9:30am-7:30pm…. A tradition returns home! Join us for a live reading of Ben Franklin's Autobiography at the Franklin Public Library. Everyone is welcome to read, listen, and comment on the life of our favorite Founding Father.

▪ Franklin as Composer w/ Metro-west Symphony Orchestra, Saturday, January 17 @ 11am --Benjamin Franklin: statesman, entrepreneur, scientist… composer?! Yes, our beloved Ben even dabbled in composing his own music. Join us to explore this aspect of our namesake with the help of the Metro-West Symphony Orchestra at the Franklin Public Library.

▪ Ben Franklin Birthday Bash, Saturday, January 17 @ 2pm Join us as we celebrate the birthday of Ben Franklin himself! Music, games, and more at the Franklin Public Library.

The Franklin Historical Museum is located at 80 West Central Street, Franklin. The museum is open Saturday mornings from 10AM-1PM (except as noted above), Sunday afternoons from 1:00PM-4:00PM, and, experimentally, Thursday from noon to 5pm. Questions? FHS girls basketball win first game on road in Maine

Via Instagram, Franklin TV, and our subscription to HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the Winter sports competition for Franklin High School on Friday, December 26, 2025

Girls Basketball = Franklin, 44 @ Lake Region (ME), 30 – Final
– Franklin put together an impressive defensive performance to secure its first win of the season. After struggling in first quarters through the opening four games of the season, Franklin scored 22 points in the first to earn a win over Lake Region. Sophia Sacramone scored five points and hit one of Franklin’s four threes in the first. Lila Reagan, Ava Bonney, and freshman Chloe Gordon also knocked down shots from distance to help the Panthers jump out to a 22-5 lead. Bonney sank a second three in the second quarter, but it was Franklin’s lone basket of the quarter. Franklin held Lake Region to just two points to make sure it went into the break with the lead. Gordon, Tessah Rodrigues, and Liz Dumais each sank threes in the third as the Panthers extended their lead to 38-15 going to the final eight minutes. Lake Region came back in the fourth with three triples and 15 points. Franklin went without a field goal in the fourth, but went 6-of-8 at the line and sealed the victory.

Mitzi & I review the special events scheduled at the Library for January 2026 (audio)

FM #1616 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 1616 in the series.

This session shares my conversation with Mitzi Gousie, Programming and Outreach Librarian with the Franklin Public Library. We had our discussion virtually on Thursday, December 18, 2025.

We talk about
Reviewed the regular open hours, book sale and holiday scheduling for the month
Closed on Sundays due to budget reduction
Closing early Weds, Dec 31 and all day on Thursday, Jan 1 for New Years
Book sale weekend January 16 & 17
Library events for January 2026
In calendar order rather than by category this time around

An update from the Circulation Desk on the new home delivery service we mentioned at the end of our recording:

“Awareness of the service is growing and we had some sharp growth after contacting one of the many local assisted living services in the area. We expect steady organic growth with sharp spikes as we reach out to more senior spaces in 2026.”

Registration for those events required should be done through the Town website, Library page. There are nefarious folks trying to convince folks otherwise via Facebook. Be safe, use the official Town and Library pages.

The show notes include links to the Library page and to the calendar of events where registration for some of the events is required/recommended.

The recording runs about 18 minutes, so let’s listen in.

Franklin vs. Weymouth Food Pantries Face Off in "SOUPer Bowl 2026" Soup Drive

The Franklin Food Pantry is gearing up to defend its title as SOUPer Bowl Champion against the Weymouth Food Pantry in the highly anticipated SOUPer Bowl 2026 canned soup competition.

The two pantries are asking their communities to donate cans of soup starting January 8, 2026. The pantry that receives the most soup by February 8, 2026, will be named SOUPer Bowl Champ 2026.

The Franklin Food Pantry and Weymouth Food Pantry previously faced off in 2025. The competition resulted in a combined total of 4,967 cans of soup, with Franklin edging out the win by a mere 205 cans.

While SOUPer Bowl 2026 is a friendly, spirited competition, the stakes are profoundly serious. Hunger in Massachusetts is reaching crisis levels, with a staggering 1 in 3 people experiencing food insecurity. This challenge will help stock the shelves in both pantries and combat the skyrocketing hunger in our communities.

Here's how to get in on the game and support your pantry:
What: SOUPer Bowl 2026 (Canned Soup Drive)
Who: Franklin Food Pantry vs. Weymouth Food Pantry
When: January 8 to February 8, 2026

To Donate:
Bring donations to the Franklin Food Pantry, 341 W Central St., Franklin, MA,
02038, or donate via the Franklin Food Pantry's Amazon Wish List
Bring donations to the Weymouth Food Pantry Warehouse, 40 Reservoir Park Dr., Suite E, Rockland, MA, 02370, or donate via Weymouth Food Pantry's Amazon Wish List
Individuals, families, houses of worship, sports teams, clubs, business, and other groups are encouraged to join the competition
