The Robbinsville Lady Black Knights Softball team picked up their 27th win of the season and a state title in class A softball today. Robbinsville downed Bear Grass Charter 8-3 in game 2 of the best of three state finals series. Bear Grass finishes the season at 24-5.

EMPLOYEES COMPLETE LEADERSHIP ACADEMY
In a press release from Southwestern Community College Five of the college's employees recently completed nine months of training and graduated from the Western Community College Leadership Academy (WCCLA).

SCC’s participants this year were Norrie Meus, History Instructor and Social Sciences Department Chair; Carly Messer, Director of Nursing; Sheryl Monroe, Employment & Benefits Specialist; Erin McCully, Director of Instructional Development; and John Robinson Culinary Arts Program Coordinator.

Formed in 2021, WCCLA aims to form values-driven, high-potential, high-performing leaders who think and collaborate in new and different ways with people within their colleges and across the region. The academy is a collaboration between A-B Tech Community College, Blue Ridge Community College, Haywood Community College, Isothermal Community College, McDowell Technical Community College, Southwestern and Western Piedmont Community College.

“I’m extremely proud of all our employees who undertook this endeavor while continuing to excel in their respective roles at Southwestern,” said Dr. Don Tomas, SCC’s President. “I’m pleased that SCC continues to work alongside our neighboring community colleges to offer this academy. Partnerships like this ultimately benefit all of our students and communities.”

Barb Cooney, Director of Professional Development at A-B Tech, served as the academy’s lead facilitator alongside human resources representatives from the participating colleges. Erin See, Southwestern’s Director of Human Resources, represented SCC in that capacity.

The Robbinsville Lady Black Knights are now one win away from a state title in class 1A. The Knights got a 10-0 win over Bear Grass Charter in game 1 of the finals last night. The Lady Black Knights (26-2) look to close out the title in the best two of three series today in Williamston, NC. against the Bears (24-4).

The Robbinsville Softball team has earned a birth in the state finals in class 1A after downing Bethany Community 11-1 and 6-1 to win the west regional title 2-0. The top seed Lady Black Knights (25-2) will face top seed Bear Grass Charter (24-3) this week for the state title best of three date TBA.

The Swain County Lady Maroon Devils' run came to an end tonight as they fell at Roxboro Community 13-7 in the 2A state softball playoffs fourth round. Swain finishes the season 19-5. Meanwhile in class 1A Robbinsville advances to the west regional finals with a 10-0 shutout over Falls Lake Academy. Top seed Robbinsville (23-2) will now face Bethany Community the 6 seed in the best of three regionals starting Tuesday.

The Franklin Panther track team grabbed a couple of state individual championships in class 5A today!. Jonas Phillips sets a state record in the men's 300 meter hurdles with a mark of 38.97 seconds en route to a state title. Franklin's Anna Timan won the 5A women's state title in the 300 meter hurdles with a mark of 44.49 seconds and took 2nd in the 100m hurdles. Other results from today's championships:

Women's Competitions:

4x800m relay 2nd place

4x200m relay 4th place

Amy Mendoza took 6th place in the 1600m run, 7th in the 3200m run, and 8th in the 800m run.

Ladies track team placed 7th in the 4x100m relay

Adriana Stewart 5th place in pole vault

Izzy Shope 5th in the girls high jump

Jonas Phillips 5th in 110m hurdles

The Franklin Lady Panther Softball team lost last night 9-2 at North Davidson to end the season 18-8 in the third round of the class 5A state softball playoffs. North Davidson moves on to the sectional finals where they will face North Lincoln. Meanwhile in other area softball Swain County advances in class 2A with a thrilling 2-1 win over Murphy. Swain now 19-4 will face Roxboro Community on Friday in the sectional finals.

The Franklin women's track team has claimed the NCHSAA West Regional Championship for 2026. The men's track team finished second in regional competition yesterday. Among those teams headed to state from the men's team include the men's 4x100 meter relay team, the boys 4x200 meter relay team, Jonah Brant on the pole vault, Jonas Phillips in the 110 meter and 300 meter hurdles and Reid Laseter in 400 meters individual. Garrett Young also qualified in the shot put, the men's 4x400 meter relay team and Gabe Nickerson in the long jump.

Women's qualifiers include:

4x800 meter relay team

Kamden Reis in long jump and triple jump

Ella Raby in shot put

Anna Timan in 100 meter hurdles and 300 meter hurdles

Adrianna Stewart in pole vault

The Franklin Panther Baseball Team fell short on Friday Night in second round 5A playoff action losing at 6 seed East Lincoln 7-3. The Panthers finish the season 12-11. In other area baseball playoff action in 2A Hayesville ends Swain County's run with a 9-2 victory. Swain finishes the season at 10-10.

The Franklin Lady Panthers down the Erwin at home last night. Franklin (18-7) will now face the 3 seed North Davidson on Tuesday in round three. Swain County gets a 6-5 thrilling home win over Mountain Island Charter in 2A action. The 3 seed Swain (18-4) will host 6 seed Murphy on Tuesday. Cherokee loses at Starmount last night 8-0 and finishes the season 8-9.
