On Wednesday, Frederick lost more than a radio legend โ we lost a voice that helped define our community.
For generations of listeners, Tommy Grunwell was simply โThe Voice of Frederick.โ From the moment he joined the WFMD/WFRE family in 1968, Tommy became a trusted friend who greeted our community each morning with warmth, humor, and an unmistakable love for Frederick.
After proudly serving four-and-a-half years in the United States Marine Corps, Tommy made Frederick his home and dedicated more than three decades on the air at WFMD and WFRE. Whether behind the microphone, emceeing community events, supporting local charities, championing youth programs, raising money for worthy causes, or simply lending a helping hand, Tommy used his platform to make Frederick a better place.
His voice became part of the soundtrack of daily life in Frederick County, but his impact extended far beyond the airwaves. Tommy believed deeply in service, community, and helping neighbors in need. He touched countless lives through organizations like the Maryland Sheriffโs Youth Ranch, Toys for Tots, Rotary, youth football programs, veterans groups, and so many other causes that benefited from his passion and generosity.
Most importantly, Tommy was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, Marine, friend, and community leader. His legacy is not measured by the years he spent on the radio, but by the lives he touched and the countless people who considered him family.
Thank you, Tommy, for the laughter, the stories, the service, and the love you showed Frederick for nearly six decades.
A remarkable voice. A lasting legacy.
Rest easy, Tommy Grunwell. You will forever be remembered as the Voice of Frederick. โค๏ธ๐๏ธ
