He said the barrels of the filtration system are over 35 years old, and deteriorated, so that’s what they would focus on this year. Though more repairs are scheduled, when it opens back up, swimmers can expect the water to be cleaner and less sandy than they’ve known.

She said the cuts are slated to begin in 2028, and that the federal portion to the state of Missouri won’t be ended at one moment, but at a rate of $1 million per year.

"She said that you can’t see in front of you if someone is turning right, since the stop sign is so far back from the intersection itself. So it makes it confusing, if not an outright gamble, to know when to turn."

In early 1936, more than 40 newspapers in southeast Missouri featured a lengthy story about how Fredericktown raised funds to build a shoe factory and provide over 400 jobs.

The Cape Girardeau Missourian went so far as to say, “In raising a fund for a shoe factory, Fredericktown has set an example that will be valuable to other towns that some time may wish to indulge in a similar activity.”

“Say she breaks her leg and has to go to a hospital. The hospitals are required to give her care regardless of her ability to pay,” Lucas said. “So that puts the hospital in a situation where they cover the care of the patient and may never receive payment for it.”

“So when Medicaid expansion happened in 2020, there we go. Then they were able to resolve uncompensated care. And because of that, hospitals aren’t closing anymore.”

Lucas said if the state does not “pony up” to pay for uncompensated care, then rural hospitals could realistically shut down.
