Judging is complete in the remaining digital submission categories of the Student Journalism Contest State Finals, and won the state title in the Newspaper Photography category. The win — Denkovich’s first — also marks Freedom Focus Media’s first ever state title in a photography category.

Tuesday, members of the FHS Press, , and traveled to for the 2025 Student Journalism Competition State Finals. FHS Press Managing Editor .calla took first in the Newspaper News Writing category, and Shawnee Editor-in-Chief took first in Yearbook Spread Design. The awards marked the first state titles for both Reynolds and Tuszynski.

The road to Finals for PSPA competitors begins at Regionals in the fall, where students must take first place in their respective contests to advance. Freedom competed at the Slippery Rock Regional in November.

The majority of the competition categories were judged, and winners were announced at the conclusion of Tuesday’s event; photography, broadcast video, blog, and podcast competitors have until April 8 to submit their edited work for judging, and those winners will be announced shortly thereafter.

Several members of Freedom Focus Media have been named winners in the Student Keystone Media Awards, sponsored by the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association: ’s Kara Aland and Riley Tokar earned first place in the Broadcast Feature category for their piece on Cafe 116, while Chris Denkovich and Lainey Tuszynski took second place in the same category! Addison Freeman, Anna Majors, Hannah Shaffer, and 2024 alum Maddy Meyer of the and earned Honorable Mention for “Excellence in Reporting on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” for their coverage of the bocce team and Cafe 116 over the past two years.

This also marks the third consecutive year that Denkovich has earned a Student Keystone Media Award.

From November 6-9th, eight print media workshop members traveled to Philadelphia for the JEA National Convention. Students were able to attend different sessions to learn more about journalism. The convention provided the students with valuable educational experiences that they can bring back to the classroom. There were sessions that interested all the students in different ways, whether it was for newspaper, yearbook, or even broadcast. The eight Freedom students also got to tour the city of Philadelphia, where they saw many historical landmarks!
