Our Story
Many people, especially children, have become shackled by social media and transfixed by their technological devices.
A generation ago, kids went outside to play as much as they could. But this isn't the case today. Now, they derive their entertainment from YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, mobile apps, video games, and TV. Even when they're outside, they'll still likely have a smartphone, tablet, or Nintendo Switch in hand.
Obesity is perhaps the most visible symptom of the lack of outdoor play, but dozens of studies from around the world show regular time outdoors produces significant improvements in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, learning ability, creativity and mental, psychological and emotional well-being. Plus, when children engage in outdoor play, it improves their social development (source: The Guardian).
In response to this growing problem, Take a Hike NJ was founded in 2015 by Billy Visconti of Freehold Township, NJ. The primary goal of this community organization is to promote the benefits of outdoor recreation.
The United States has 59 National Parks, and New Jersey has close to 50 State Parks and Forests. There are so many natural wonders to explore, so put down that phone and Take a Hike!
