Crown Battery and Eagle 99 WFRO are counting down to America's 250th birthday! Each week until July 4th of 2026, we will be sharing historical highlights on-air and online as we prepare for this momentous occasion 🇺🇸

From December 8th through December 14th, history delivered some memorable moments: Martin Luther King Jr. received his Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, smallpox was officially declared eradicated by the World Health Organization in 1979, and former Beatle John Lennon was shot and killed outside his New York City apartment in 1980. Pennsylvania became the second state to ratify the US Constitution in 1787, George Washington, the first president of the United States, passed away in 1799, and UNICEF was established in 1946.

From December 1st through December 7th, history delivered some memorable moments: Christopher Columbus arrived in Hispaniola in 1492, Henry Ford introduced the first moving assembly line in 1913, and the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 led to the United States entering World War II. During this same early-December stretch, the 13th Amendment was ratified in 1865, officially ending slavery; Flight 19 vanished in the Bermuda Triangle in 1945; and Rosa Parks’ arrest in 1955 ignited the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

From November 26th to November 30th, history delivered some memorable moments: President George Washington issued his first Thanksgiving proclamation in 1789, Thomas Edison demonstrated his phonograph in 1877, and the first Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade marched through the streets in 1924. During this same range of dates, Mark Twain was born in 1835, President Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1863, and Ann Hodges became the only confirmed person to be struck by a meteorite in 1954.
