Crown Battery and Eagle 99 WFRO are counting down to America's 250th birthday! Each week until July 4th of 2026, we will be sharing historical highlights on-air and online as we prepare for this momentous occasion 🇺🇸
From June 15th through June 21st, history delivered a remarkable run of defining moments: The U.S. Congress officially adopted the Great Seal of the United States in 1782, while in 1812 the U.S. Senate voted 19-13 to declare war on Great Britain over violations of American rights at sea and British support of Native American attacks on the frontier. In 1983, Sally Ride became the first American woman in space, beginning a six-day mission aboard the space shuttle Challenger. The date also marks the 1215 sealing of the Magna Carta by King John, a landmark document that helped shape modern democracies. American author and photographer John Howard Griffin was born in Dallas in 1920, and in 1972 five men were arrested during a break-in at the Watergate complex, igniting the scandal that ultimately implicated President Richard Nixon's re-election campaign.
