Some dogs don’t just remember you — they remember their toys too.

A study found that “gifted word learner” dogs can recall the names of their toys even two years later. In one experiment, five highly trained dogs learned twelve toy names in a week. When tested again after two years, four of them still remembered up to nine names, performing far better than chance.

While not every pup can memorize dozens of toys, researchers say these findings show just how deeply dogs link words and objects. Regular play, practice, and naming games help strengthen this memory — proof that our furry friends are smarter than we often give them credit for.
