This past week has been emotional for me as a mum and wife.
My husband has degenerative myopia and astigmatism. His sight has been a challenge for as long as I’ve known him; minus 14 in the right eye and minus 7 in the left eye. I’ve watched him adjust to the world differently, quietly struggling at times, but always doing it with strength and grace. I've also got myopia not as bad as his. His condition has made me more aware, more careful, especially when it comes to our son.
Lately, I noticed our little boy mixing up letters while reading. He’d say “B” when it was “D,” and “D” when it was “P.” A small thing, maybe—but my heart told me to look closer. I couldn’t shake the worry that he might be following in his dad’s footsteps.
We took him for an eye test, and at first they said it was both myopia and astigmatism. My heart sank. But after further tests, they confirmed it was just astigmatism—manageable, treatable. He’s been prescribed glasses that should help correct his sight as he grows.
I can’t explain the relief. The gratitude. The reminder that as parents, we’re not meant to have all the answers but we are meant to keep showing up, paying attention, and following our instincts.
If you’re a parent reading this, trust your gut. Watch the little things. Don’t wait. Sight is more than vision, it’s how our children see the world, and how we help them navigate it.
