MOCCASINS; APACHE:
The Apache moccasin is unique in it's design. No other tribe's moccasin is like it. Southwestern tribes (Navajo, Zuni, Hopi, Apache), of desert areas all wear boot style moccasins, but none of them is similar to these shown here. The boot feature protects against snake bites, and the upturned tips prevents the wearer from tripping while running, in addition to cactus needles, sharp rocks, and other desert terrain impediments. Ankles were tied for support, and would be loosened/tightened for ventilation or insulation. Apaches are legendary long haul runners. These fleet footed people traveled 70 miles a day on foot with women, and children.
During the US Army's campaign against Geronimo, an all warrior group of Chiricahuas were recorded as covering 100 miles in a single day. The next time you are on a road trip, set the trip portion of your odometer, and record a hundred miles. Bear in mind that you are travelling on a blacktop highway, while they operated in some of the harshest terrain on earth, with temperatures of up to 120 degrees at times. I recently saw a video of San Carlos Apaches in a protest march on a blacktop roadway near their reservation. Several women in the group appeared to be north of 300 pounds, and I was astonished at the pace they walked at; they kept abreast of the far more athletic looking marchers in front. This comes more than 130 years after their war ended; without the preparation, diet, and fitness of that period.
Meanwhile, the next time you are in a sporting goods store or department stores, take a close look at the tip portion of running shoes, and see if you notice a similar design to the Apache moc. Also remember that this design has been around for more than 20,000 years.
