After a lot of hard work and in-depth research, we have confirmed the three NGOs that we will support with A Guide to the Birdsong of Migration:
1. POP NO’J (Guatemala)
POP NO’J is a non-profit organisation that works with an Indigenous Peoples’ approach, recognising history, identity, culture, and ancestral knowledge as strengths for building a just world. It is a plural collective for reflection, analysis, research, exchange, and learning that facilitates and accompanies processes of organisation, training, promotion, and participation of the Maya People in the construction of buen vivir (good living) in Guatemala.
Specifically, we will support their project “We Are Mayas, Wherever We Are.” The project will create an illustrated guide to help Maya children who have experienced migration or displacement reconnect with and strengthen their cultural identity. The guide will collect stories, knowledge, and practices that affirm Maya language, spirituality, and traditions, and will be shared with teachers, civil society groups, and families in both urban and rural contexts, as well as with communities abroad.
2. Calidris (Colombia)
Since 1989, Calidris has worked with passion and commitment to conserve birds and their habitats in Colombia. Founded in Santiago de Cali, the NGO has been a pioneer in scientific research, environmental education, community capacity building, and the promotion of sustainable productive practices.
Your donations will support their project focused on monitoring and sharing knowledge about migratory shorebirds along Colombia’s Pacific coast.
3. Amazilias Association (Mexico)
Amazilias is a feminist organisation created to invite and include women birdwatchers in Mexico, with the initial goal of recognising the work of leading female ornithologists in the field, while also developing programs to strengthen and foster autonomy among young women birdwatchers. Their aim is to achieve greater visibility at events, in activities, and even in citizen science databases such as eBird.
The Birdsong project will support their project “Girls in Flight”, an initiative that focuses on training young Mexican women
