PG&E’s Operations and Meteorology teams are monitoring a strong wind event forecasted to bring elevated wildfire risk to the Sierra, Southern Central Coast and portions of the North and East Bay. Offshore Diablo winds are expected to peak Thursday across Northern and Central Sierra, including portions of the North and East Bay. Mono winds are projected to be strongest on Friday in the Southern Sierra, with Santa Ana winds expanding into Southern Los Padres and across the Tehachapi Mountains on Friday. The strongest winds are expected in the South, with very low relative humidity and dry vegetation across most affected areas. Strong winds, combined with low humidity and dry vegetation, are creating elevated fire danger across the affected areas.

At approximately 1730 on Wednesday, we began de-energizing customers in portions of Alameda, Contra Costa, Lassen and Shasta counties and will continue through early morning, Thursday, October 15. A second wave of de-energizations, focused on Central Coast and Southern portions of our service Area, will start Friday morning.

As of 6 a.m. Thursday, customers who have had their power shut off for safety, by county:

High Winds, Dry Conditions Mean PG&E May Need to Proactively Turn Off Power for Safety Wednesday Evening in Portions of Twenty-Nine Counties

PG&E Has Sent Day-Ahead Notifications to About 70,000 Customers Who Might Experience a Public Safety Power Shutoff

OAKLAND, Calif. — Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) is monitoring a potential dry offshore wind event forecasted to start Wednesday evening, October 14 through Saturday evening October 17. The strongest winds are expected in the Sierra, southern Central Coast and portions of the North and East Bay. Given this wind event and current dry conditions, including extremely dried vegetation, PG&E sent one-day advance notifications Tuesday afternoon to customers in targeted areas where PG&E may need to proactively turn power off for safety to reduce the risk of wildfire from energized powerlines.

The potential Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) event, starting Wednesday evening and forecasted to last through Saturday afternoon, could affect approximately 70,000 customers across twenty-nine counties. Roughly 4,000 customers who were impacted by PSPS events earlier in the week may also be affected by this event. Roughly 5,700 customers who were included in the original PSPS event have since been de-scoped.

Important notes about this PSPS event:

Offshore Diablo winds will peak Thursday across the northern and central Sierra, as well as into portions of the North and East Bay.
The Mono winds will be strongest on Friday in the southern Sierra, with Santa Ana winds also expanding into southern Los Padres and across the Tehachapi’s on Friday.
Strongest winds overall will be in the South, but RH will be in the single digits and teens across most areas. Same with veg- dry in all areas.
Even though this is a large event, new modeling tools have been implemented to allow for higher resolution weather data which allows us to be more surgical when scoping. For example, Machine Learning wind gust models at the weather station level help fill in the gaps of coarser resolution traditional weather models. Sectionalizing is another big one.

At the time of this news release distribution, the planned outage is approximately 12 hours away, and conditions may change.

Initial customer notifications, via text, email, and automated phone call began Monday approximately two days prior to the potential shut off. Subsequent customer notifications, due to an increased scope, began on Tuesday, approximately one day prior to the potential shutoff. PG&E employees will conduct individual in-person visits, when possible, to customers enrolled in the company’s Medical Baseline Program who do not verify they have received these important safety communications, with a primary focus on customers who rely on electricity for critical life-sustaining equipment.

Why PG&E Calls a PSPS Event

We initiate PSPS when the weather forecast is for such severe weather that people’s safety, lives, homes and businesses may be in danger of wildfires.

As each weather situation is unique, we carefully review a combination of factors when deciding if power must be turned off. These factors include:

Low humidity levels, generally 30% and below
A forecast of high winds, particularly sustained winds above 19 miles per hour and wind gusts above 30-40 miles per hour.
Condition of dry material on the ground and low moisture content of vegetation.
A Red Flag Warning declared by the National Weather Service
Real-time ground observations from our Hazard Awareness and Warning Center and from our crews working across the service territory.

Our decision-making process also accounts for the presence of trees tall enough to strike powerlines.

This set of criteria is a first step which may lead to further analysis by our meteorology team to determine if a PSPS event is necessary.

PG&E's Commitment to Wildfire Safety

Using advanced technologies and rebuilding the electric system from the underground up, we are preventing wildfires, improving reliability and reducing costs over the long term. We are building the energy grid of the future that our customers deserve while also taking immediate steps to keep customers safe.

Our wildfire prevention work relies on layers of protection to make our system safer and more resilient while positioning us to better serve our customers in the short and long term. These tools help us respond to our state’s evolving climate challenges:

Our 10,000-mile Undergrounding Program is the largest effort in the U.S. to underground powerlines as a wildfire risk reduction measure.
In addition to undergrounding, we are strengthening the electric system with stronger poles and covered powerlines in and near high fire-risk areas.
Enhanced Powerline Safety Settings (EPSS) decrease ignitions and provide wildfire protection to all customers living in high fire-risk areas.
We continue to reduce the impact of Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS). While there were no weather-driven PSPS outages in 2022, it continues to be a top focus for our team.
We are managing trees and other vegetation located near powerlines that could cause a power outage and/or ignition.
We are also investing in advanced tools and technologies like artificial intelligence and drones that help us automate fire detection and response.

At approximately 8:00a.m. on Sunday, September 13, 2026, PG&E issued weather all-clear notifications for customers in Colusa, Glenn, Lassen, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Shasta, Tehama and Yolo counties, as well as four tribal communities affected by this PSPS event. With all-clear notifications in place, crews began patrolling and inspecting electrical infrastructure and, where necessary, making repairs before safely restoring power to customers.

As of 1:40 p.m. on Sunday, September 13, 2026, PG&E has restored power to approximately 8,400 customers. Inspections must be completed before power can be restored to ensure electric equipment has not been damaged and can be safely reenergized.

As weather conditions improved, PG&E removed approximately 1,850 customers from the scope of this PSPS event in portions of El Dorado, Plumas, Shasta and Sierra counties.

PG&E continues to closely monitor weather conditions in portions of Butte, Colusa, Glenn, Tehama and Yolo counties, where approximately 2,500 customers remain under consideration for a potential power shutoff overnight Sunday into Monday. Some of the customers would be experiencing a power shutoff for the second time this weekend, as their earlier shutoff was due to strong winds and low humidity reaching wildfire risk thresholds sooner than expected.

PG&E is notifying these customers about the potential power shutoffs through its standard customer notification process. We understand outages can be disruptive and appreciate our customers’ patience as we work to help keep them and our communities safe. As conditions improve and it is safe to restore service, power may be restored as early as the afternoon of September 14. These times are estimates and may change based on weather and field conditions.

09/10/2026

Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) is monitoring a potential high wind event in portions of 11 counties in Northern Sierra and Sacramento Valley areas. This weather is currently forecast to reach our service area on Saturday, September 12 and continue through Sunday, September 13. As of 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 10, approximately 14,000 customers in portions of 11 counties and 4 tribal areas are in scope for this PSPS event. This would be the fourth Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) event of 2026.

Counties and customer counts
• Yolo (9)
• El Dorado (729)
• Nevada (762)
• Placer (1,318)
• Glenn (611)
• Sierra (583)
• Colusa (529)
• Lassen (744)
• Tehama (1,080)
• Shasta (2,658)
• Plumas (4,768)

This potential onshore wind event, combined with dry ground conditions and relatively low humidity, forecast will bring could create a period of elevated fire danger. Given these conditions, PG&E has activated its Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and began sending customer notifications Wednesday night, September 9, to customers in targeted areas where PG&E may need to proactively turn power off for safety to reduce the risk of wildfire from energized powerlines.
The duration and extent of power outages will depend on the weather in each area, as well as any damage and repairs that may be needed. The decision to begin shutoffs is based on real-time weather conditions, and de-energizations may be delayed or cancelled. Changes in scope may also occur based on real-time conditions.

PG&E follows a plan to notify affected counties and impacted customers before releasing PSPS scoping details. PG&E initiates a PSPS when severe weather conditions pose a significant wildfire threat, even if local weather seems mild. This is because powerlines often travel through different regions, and the line serving an area might pass through a hazardous location. High winds, low humidity, and dry vegetation in these areas can necessitate a PSPS to ensure community safety.

Each PSPS is unique and events are initiated based on real-time weather conditions including measurements of wind, relative humidity, and modeling to assess the state of possible fuels. PSPS events significantly avoid greater damages and impacts to PG&E customers and hometowns. For example, a Technosylva fire spread simulation showed that if the May 17-18, 2026 PSPS had not been initiated, up to 270,000 acres could have been impacted by wildfires. Additionally, during patrols of the de-energized circuits prior to restoring power in that event, PG&E found three incidents of wind-related damages and one hazard.
