ਕਾਮਣਿ ਤਉ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ਕਰਿ ਜਾ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਕੰਤੁ ਮਨਾਇ ॥ ਮਤੁ ਸੇਜੈ ਕੰਤੁ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਏਵੈ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਾਇ ॥ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਪਿਰ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਤਉ ਬਣਿਆ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥ ਕੀਆ ਤਉ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਹੈ ਜਾ ਸਹੁ ਧਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥ ਭਉ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ਤਬੋਲ ਰਸੁ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਭਾਉ ਕਰੇਇ ॥ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਸਉਪੇ ਕੰਤ ਕਉ ਤਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਭੋਗੁ ਕਰੇਇ ॥੧॥ ਮਃ ੩ ॥ ਕਾਜਲ ਫੂਲ ਤੰਬੋਲ ਰਸੁ ਲੇ ਧਨ ਕੀਆ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥ ਸੇਜੈ ਕੰਤੁ ਨ ਆਇਓ ਏਵੈ ਭਇਆ ਵਿਕਾਰੁ ॥੨॥ ਮਃ ੩ ॥ ਧਨ ਪਿਰੁ ਏਹਿ ਨ ਆਖੀਅਨਿ ਬਹਨਿ ਇਕਠੇ ਹੋਇ ॥ ਏਕ ਜੋਤਿ ਦੁਇ ਮੂਰਤੀ ਧਨ ਪਿਰੁ ਕਹੀਐ ਸੋਇ ॥੩॥ ਪਉੜੀ ॥ ਭੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਨਾਮਿ ਨ ਲਗੈ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਭਉ ਊਪਜੈ ਭੈ ਭਾਇ ਰੰਗੁ ਸਵਾਰਿ ॥ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਰਤਾ ਰੰਗ ਸਿਉ ਹਉਮੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਮਾਰਿ ॥ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਅਤਿ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਭੇਟਿਆ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ॥ ਭਉ ਭਾਉ ਸਭੁ ਤਿਸ ਦਾ ਸੋ ਸਚੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥੯॥

ਵਿਆਖਿਆ: ਹੇ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ! ਤਦੋਂ ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਬਣਾ ਜਦੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਖਸਮ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਕਰ ਲਏਂ, (ਨਹੀਂ ਤਾਂ) ਮਤਾਂ ਖਸਮ ਸੇਜ ਤੇ ਆਵੇ ਹੀ ਨਾਹ ਤੇ ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਐਵੇਂ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੀ ਚਲਾ ਜਾਏ। ਹੇ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ! ਜੇ ਖਸਮ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਮੰਨ ਜਾਏ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਬਣਿਆ ਸਮਝ। ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦਾ ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਕਬੂਲ ਹੈ ਜੇ ਖਸਮ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਰੇ। ਜੇ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਡਰ (ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿਣ) ਨੂੰ ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਨ ਦਾ ਰਸ ਬਣਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਨੂੰ ਭੋਜਨ (ਭਾਵ, ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਆਧਾਰ) ਬਣਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਤਨ ਮਨ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਹਵਾਲੇ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਪੂਰਨ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰਦੀ ਹੈ) ਤਾਂ ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀ! ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਨੇ ਸੁਰਮਾ, ਫੁੱਲ ਤੇ ਪਾਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਰਸ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ, (ਪਰ ਜੇ) ਖਸਮ ਸੇਜ ਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਆਇਆ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਸਗੋਂ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਵਿਛੋੜੇ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਣ ਇਹ ਦੁਖਦਾਈ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ) ॥੨॥ ਜੋ (ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਸਰੀਰਕ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ) ਰਲ ਕੇ ਬਹਿਣ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਅਸਲ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਖਸਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਖੀਦਾ; ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਦੋਹਾਂ ਜਿਸਮਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਇੱਕੋ ਆਤਮਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ ਉਹ ਹੈ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਹੈ ਪਤੀ ॥੩॥ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਡਰ (ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿਣ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣ ਸਕਦਾ (ਭਾਵ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗ ਸਕਦਾ)। ਇਹ ਡਰ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲੇ, (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਡਰ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਤੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਭਗਤੀ ਦਾ) ਰੰਗ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਤੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਦੀ ਸਹੈਤਾ ਨਾਲ) ਹਉਮੈ ਤੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਸਰੀਰ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਦੇ) ਰੰਗ ਨਾਲ ਰੰਗੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਿਆਂ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਤੇ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਇਹ ਡਰ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ (ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਿਆ ਮਿਲਦਾ) ਹੈ ਉਹ ਆਪ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ (ਹਰ ਥਾਂ) ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ ॥੯॥

सलोक मः ३ ॥
कामणि तउ सीगारु करि जा पहिलां कंतु मनाइ ॥ मतु सेजै कंतु न आवई एवै बिरथा जाइ ॥ कामणि पिर मनु मानिआ तउ बणिआ सीगारु ॥ कीआ तउ परवाणु है जा सहु धरे पिआरु ॥ भउ सीगारु तबोल रसु भोजनु भाउ करेइ ॥ तनु मनु सउपे कंत कउ तउ नानक भोगु करेइ ॥१॥ मः ३ ॥ काजल फूल त्मबोल रसु ले धन कीआ सीगारु ॥ सेजै कंतु न आइओ एवै भइआ विकारु ॥२॥ मः ३ ॥ धन पिरु एहि न आखीअनि बहनि इकठे होइ ॥ एक जोति दुइ मूरती धन पिरु कहीऐ सोइ ॥३॥ पउड़ी ॥ भै बिनु भगति न होवई नामि न लगै पिआरु ॥ सतिगुरि मिलिऐ भउ ऊपजै भै भाइ रंगु सवारि ॥ तनु मनु रता रंग सिउ हउमै त्रिसना मारि ॥ मनु तनु निरमलु अति सोहणा भेटिआ क्रिसन मुरारि ॥ भउ भाउ सभु तिस दा सो सचु वरतै संसारि ॥९॥

अर्थ: हे स्त्री! तब सिंगार बना जब पहले खसम को प्रसन्न कर लें, (नहीं तो) शाय़द खसम सेज पर आए ही न और सिंगार इस तरह ही व्यर्थ ही चला जाए। हे स्त्री! अगर खसम का मन मान जाए तो ही सिंगार बना समझ। स्त्री का सिंगार किया हुआ तो ही कबूल है अगर खसम उस को प्यार करे। अगर जीव-स्त्री प्रभू के डर (में रहने) को सिंगार और पान का रस बनाती है, प्रभू के प्यार को भोजन (भावार्थ, ज़िंदगी का आधार) बनाती है, और अपना तन मन खसम-प्रभू के हवाले कर देती है (भावार्थ, पूर्ण तौर पर प्रभू की रज़ा में चलती है) तो हे नानक जी! उस को खसम-प्रभू मिलता है ॥१॥ स्त्री ने सुरमा, फूल और पानों का रस ले कर सिंगार किया, (परन्तु अगर) खसम सेज पर ना आया तो यह सिंगार बल्कि विकार बन गया (क्योंकि विछोड़े के कारण यह दुखदाई हो गया) ॥२॥ जो (केवल शरीरक तौर पर) रल कर बैठन उसको असल स्त्री खसम नहीं कहते; जिनके दोनों जिस्मों में एक आत्मा हो जाए वह है स्त्री और वह है पती ॥३॥ प्रभू के डर (में रहने) तो बिना उसकी भगती नहीं हो सकती और उसके नाम में प्यार नहीं बन सकता (भावार्थ, उसका नाम प्यारा नहीं लग सकता)। यह डर तब ही पैदा होता है अगर गुरू मिले, (इस तरह) डर के द्वारा और प्यार के द्वारा (भगती का) रंग अच्छा चढ़ता है। (प्रभू के डर और प्यार की सहायता से) अहंकार और तृष्णा को मार कर मनुष्य का मन और शरीर (प्रभू की भगती के) रंग में रंगे जाते हैं। प्रभू को मिलने पर मन और शरीर पवित्र और सुंदर हो जाते हैं। यह डर और प्रेम सब कुछ जिस प्रभू का (बख़्श़या मिलता) है वह आप जगत में (हर जगह) मौजूद है ॥९॥

Meaning: O bride, decorate yourself, after you surrender and accept your Husband Lord. Otherwise, your Husband Lord will not come to your bed, and your ornaments will be useless. O bride, your decorations will adorn you, only when your Husband Lord’s Mind is pleased. Your ornaments will be acceptable and approved, only when your Husband Lord loves you. So make the Fear of God your ornaments, joy your betel nuts to chew, and love your food. Surrender your body and mind to your Husband Lord, and then, O Nanak Ji, He will enjoy you. ||1|| Third Mahalaa: The wife takes flowers, and fragrance of betel, and decorates herself. But her Husband Lord does not come to her bed, and so these efforts are useless. ||2|| Third Mahalaa: They are not said to be husband and wife, who merely sit together. They alone are called husband and wife, who have one light in two bodies. ||3|| Paurree: Without the Fear of God, there is no devotional worship, and no love for the Naam, the Name of the Lord. Meeting with the True Guru, the Fear of God wells up, and one is embellished with the Fear and the Love of God. When the body and mind are imbued with the Lord’s Love, egotism and desire are conquered and subdued. The mind and body become immaculately pure and very beautiful, when one meets the Lord, the Destroyer of ego. Fear and love all belong to Him; He is the True Lord, permeating and pervading the Universe. ||9||
