Did you happen to notice that in the history of the NFL Draft, the first round has been held on April 23 a total of three times? And in those three years, the first pick for the Dallas Cowboys has been Troy Aikman (1989), DeMarcus Ware (2005) and CeeDee Lamb (2020)? Talk about good company. Thirty-six years ago today, the Cowboys would draft the NFL's all-time leading rusher. Dallas sent the No. 21 overall pick and their third-rounder to Pittsburgh for the 17th selection. With that, the team then grabbed none other than Emmitt Smith, whose laundry list of records and awards eventually landed him in the Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor and the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He was featured on the May 1990 issue of Dallas Cowboys Weekly, his first of many covers.

The first day of the NFL Draft kicked off on this date in 1999 with the Dallas Cowboys making three selections. The best of the bunch turned out to be a third-round inside linebacker out of Texas A&M, Dat Nguyen. Though perhaps a little undersized at 5-11, 238, he went on to lead the defense in tackles three times and is still 16th in franchise history with 665 team-credited takedowns. As Bill Parcells once said, Nguyen was a "football-playing dude."

Condolences to the family of John Fitzgerald, who passed away yesterday morning. You long-time fans will remember he was the starting center from 1973-80, which included the 1975 season when Tom Landry brought back the famed shotgun offense. Fitzgerald handled the transition seamlessly. He also never played on a losing team and got himself two Super Bowl rings, having enjoyed a solid career despite being overlooked for the Pro Bowl. He remains a part of the great lineage of centers who have played for the Dallas Cowboys!
