During the government shutdown, Shenandoah National Park remains openâbut its employees are going unpaid, and essential services are strained. October is the parkâs busiest month, drawing 25% of its annual 1.7 million visitors. With no federal funding flowing, the park can't collect entrance fees or fully staff facilities, leaving bathrooms uncleaned, emergency response delayed, and fragile environments at risk.
The Shenandoah National Park Trust is urging visitors to donate $30âthe usual entrance feeâto support ongoing care. âIf you visit, be prepared to be the caretaker,â said the trustâs executive director, Jessica Cocciolone.
The shutdownâs impact isnât just local. Virginia ranks 5th in the U.S. for national park tourism revenue, contributing to over $35 billion in visitor spending in 2024.
