Larry Freeman's versatility and athleticism made him one of Fort Meade's most dynamic football talents, taking him from quarterback and wide receiver for the Miners to a standout junior college playmaker and ultimately an opportunity to compete at the highest level of college football in the SEC.
At Fort Meade High School, Freeman emerged as one of Polk County's premier football talents, showcasing his versatility at both quarterback and wide receiver. His athletic ability and playmaking skills helped Fort Meade reach the state playoffs during his career, including two state runner-up finishes. Freeman earned All-County and All-State honors, establishing himself as one of the area's top all-around football players. His athletic versatility extended beyond football as he also competed in baseball and basketball.
Following his high school career, Freeman continued at Pearl River Community College, transitioning primarily to wide receiver and quickly becoming a standout junior college playmaker. As a freshman in 2005, he recorded more than 50 receptions for 800 yards and eight touchdowns. During his sophomore season, he also saw time at quarterback while helping Pearl River finish 10-2, win the 2006 MACJC State Championship, and advance to the NJCAA National Championship Game. His production and versatility made him a highly regarded national junior college prospect, earning a No. 42 ranking on Rivals' Junior College Top 100, along with major Division I interest.
Freeman signed with the University of South Carolina, earning the opportunity to compete in the Southeastern Conference after his standout junior college career. His athleticism, versatility, and proven production at Pearl River allowed him to compete within an SEC program surrounded by players with professional talent. His ability to play multiple positions and adapt to the demands of major-college football showcased the skill set that had carried him from Fort Meade to the highest level of college football.
From starring at quarterback and wide receiver for Fort Meade, to producing 800 yards and eight touchdowns at Pearl River, winning an MACJC State Championship, reaching an NJCAA National Championship Game, earning national junior college recruiting recognition and ultimately competing in the SEC at South Carolina, Larry Freeman's career represents the versatility, determination and competitive spirit that define a Polk County Sports Legend.
