Finally had a chance to post some video clips of ex-adviser Tommy Li making a surprise visit to The Accolade class to inform the staff about the NSPA Pacemaker finalist nomination.

Wow; very humbled to be named for a third consecutive year a Pacemaker finalist--one of only 29 high school journalism publications worldwide--by the National Scholastic Press Association. Accolade's newsmagazines from the 2024-2025 school year were the only publications from Orange County to be nominated for a Pacemaker award. We were also among only two finalists from Southern California (a whopping 10 were from Northern California).
We will find out Nov. 15 at an awards ceremony in Nashville, Tenn., whether we are named a Pacemaker winner, which would become our third straight as well. Go to this link from the NSPA to read more: https://studentpress.org/nspa/2025-newspaper-newsmagazine-specialty-magazine-pacemaker-finalists/

The Accolade flame passes on.
The Orange County Journalism Education Association held a board meeting on Friday, July 16, at Sage Hill School in Newport Coast, and after it was over, one of the board members suggested that we get a photo of the past and new Sunny Hills journalism teachers/advisers.
From left is Kimberley Harris, who replaced legendary adviser Carol Hallenbeck after the 1992-1993 school year; be sure to read Hallenback's obit here: https://shhsaccolade.com/20175/news/legendary-accolade-adviser-dies-at-97/
Harris is now the journalism teacher/adviser at Fullerton Union High School.
Standing in the middle is Tommy Li, who succeeded Harris starting in the 2001-2002 school year (for more on the timeline of Sunny Hills journalism teachers/advisers, go to this link: https://shhsaccolade.com/19977/feature/did-you-know-the-accolades-name-stems-from-connection-with-schools-mascot/
Finally, Li's replacement is CJ D'Innocente, who'll start his first year at Sunny Hills next Monday, Aug. 11. He will be taking over after this post, so hopefully he'll be sharing more about himself, or he'll post the online article that one of The Accolade staffers will write about him. I may or may not be checking this account since the password to access it might end up getting changed, and I don't have my own Facebook account.
Like I told my staff at the end of the spring semester, we are transitioning from Mr. Li to Mr. D! Have a blessed year, everyone!
For those Acco alum who have donated so much of their time and money to help us produce our issues, thank you, thank you, thank you! I will miss communicating with you on social media.
And to all those who have been following this page, thank you so much. We never reached our goal of 200 subscribers, but perhaps some day that will happen.
If you haven't read my farewell column yet, be sure to catch it here: https://shhsaccolade.com/21931/opinion/column-going-out-a-winner/

After retiring as an English/journalism teacher/adviser at Sunny Hills High School at the end of May, my wife and I enjoyed a nearly three-week vacation in Japan last month. We arrived at Haneda Airport on July 1, the same date that we got married on 25 years ago. We had a splendid time on a 13-night cruise sailing around the various ports of Japan and a one-day stop at Busan in South Korea. That's where my wife and I were able to catch up with 2024-2025 Opinion co-editor Kayden Kim, who grew up there and was willing to give us a quick tour of the city. I also left my iPhone behind in the taxi we were riding in to get to the restaurant we were going to have lunch at, and through some journalism-like investigative work, we were able to track down the taxi company and then the driver who was willing to drive back to the restaurant to return my phone ... for a price ($25)!

We did it! We wrapped up our historic award-winning season near the end of June when my daughter, copy editor junior Serenity Li, and I attended the 67th annual Southern California Journalism Awards ceremony in downtown Los Angeles. That's where we found out we won the first-place award for Best High School Newspaper. Kudos goes to those who produced the spring semester 2024 safety-themed specialty magazine issue, which beat out finalists from two other high school journalism publications from Los Angeles County. Be sure to read all about this award as well as the other ones we won AND read more about my retirement in the column that I posted at the end of June: https://shhsaccolade.com/21931/opinion/column-going-out-a-winner/

I know it's been awhile, so first off, here are some images from our end-of-the-year Accolade banquet from May 21 at Los Coyotes Country Club in Buena Park. Unfortunately, we forgot to take a group photo of everyone who was there. This will be among my final posts here as I have decided to accept the Fullerton Joint Union High School District's early retirement offer.
