This morning, I set up the Missing Man Table and the Honors Bell for Howard King at the Atlanta WWII History Round Table luncheon. Howard's good friend Paul Engle said a few words and rang the bell. Howard attended our monthly luncheons regularly for eight years. He will be missed.

Here are three of the many WWII stories I heard today. I hope you enjoy them.

#1. A supply truck was between camps and found an abandoned industrial warehouse area. While looking around they found a warehouse full of French Champagne and Fruit Brandy. They loaded all the boxes they could onto the truck and brought it back to camp. When we filled our five-gallon water cans we had to add chlorine tablets in order to drink it and it tasted terrible. Needless to say, we emptied all the water cans out and filled them with the French Champagne. We drank nothing but French Champagne for two weeks. We also used the French Champagne to clean our artillery barrels. It was alcohol so we figured it would clean them good. The younger kids in our unit thought the Fruit Brandy was Fruit Punch, drank too much and got drunk.

#2. It was cold and snowing, but we got picked up and taken to the chow tent for a holiday dinner of Turkey and sides. We were served our plates and went outside to find a place to eat. We saw mounds of snow, about a dozen of them. We each sat down on a mound of snow to eat our meal. When we stood up, the snow had melted under us and we noticed we were sitting on dead horses.

#3. When I got back from the war, I went to the courthouse to pay for a marriage license for me and my girlfriend. They let me pay for her license because she was 18, but they would not let me pay for my license because I was only 20 and you had to be 21 to purchase a wedding license as a male, but 18 as a female. I had to have my Dad come sign permission for me to get my marriage license so I could get married. My friends would joke and tell me I wasn't even considered a man yet! That made me so angry because I was just back from being in the thick of things in the Pacific and I could not even get married. Apparently, it was a law in Arkansas at the time.

We just dropped off all the WWII Veterans at their different homes. It was a long day for all of them and they were all very tired. The stories we heard in the van to and from the funeral and over lunch were amazing. Hilbert Margol, 101 years old (far left in the picture), just returned from Normandy and is leaving Monday for Germany for a two-week trip. Alan Kinder, 100 years old (third from the left), is leaving Sunday for Germany/Belgium to visit the Battle of the Bulge for an eight-day trip. In the middle is 99 year old Robert Ford who served in Sipan. Here is a picture today at the Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, where Martin Luther King Sr. and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. preached. I'm tired too.

After the funeral, we stopped for lunch and shared a toast to Howard. RIP Howard, you will be missed.

Today, my Dad is renting a nice minivan so tomorrow morning we can transport three of the four WWII Veterans in this picture to the funeral of the fourth WWII Veteran in this picture. Tomorrow, is Howard King's funeral. (Howard is second from the left with no hat on.) He would have been 100 in August. He was my friend and I will miss him. If there is time after the funeral, I will take Alan Kinder, Hibby Margol, and Robert Ford out to lunch with the money donated to me from listeners and followers just like you. You know who you are, and thank you!

Any listeners live in Philadelphia? I found a one-way ticket on Frontier for $16 bucks. Thinking about a day trip to see Liberty Bell and Museum of the American Revolution. Might stay the night if I can find a $16 fare back home the next day. Any other cool attractions?

You are going to love this week's Mail Call: Wartime Letters of the Mighty Eighth!
They air at 9am, 12pm, 3pm, 6pm, and 9pm.

This week's featured Mail Call, brought to you by our sponsor, the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force, highlights Jeanne Eleanor Mulquin, an American Red Cross volunteer who served with strength and compassion during and after World War II. Mulquin joined the Red Cross in 1944 and was assigned to the 339th Fighter Group, stationed at Fowlmere, England, during the summer of 1945. Later, she was transferred to Kassel/Rothwesten Airfield, where she remained in service until 1948. Her work supported the morale and well-being of U.S. service members during a critical period of wartime transition and postwar recovery. Stories like Mulquin’s shine a light on the essential roles played far beyond the front lines, contributions marked by dedication, resilience, and care.

Stay tuned as we continue to share more inspiring accounts from the archives of the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force!

I have reached out to Frontier Airlines about a partnership. I will tag them in my travel posts to get their attention. My trip to Washington D.C. and Cleveland, Ohio is booked on Frontier. I'd like to take one trip per month to visit a museum or historical site. This page has had 4.2 million views over the past 90 days. Hopefully they will see the potential in that number.

Well, I booked a weekend trip to Washington D.C. in July. The Holocaust Museum, WWII Memorial, and Arlington Cemetery are first on the list, but I hope I can get to the Vietnam Memorial and maybe either the National Archives or go up in the National Monument.
