The Independent Florida Alligator

The Independent Florida Alligator Serving the UF community since 1906 with a daily circulation of 14,000. The Independent Florida Alligator is the student newspaper of the University of Florida.

The Alligator is the largest student-run newspaper in the United States, with a circulation of 14,000 and readership of over 21,000. The paper prints every Monday during the spring, summer, and fall semesters. The Alligator has been financially and editorially independent from the university since 1973. The Alligator has been owned by non-profit, 501(c)(3) Campus Communications Inc. since its inde

pendence. Students from both UF and Santa Fe College, also located in the city of Gainesville, Florida, are allowed to work at the paper. Only college students are allowed to work in the editorial department or be advertising representatives or interns. The Alligator is distributed free on campus and around the city of Gainesville, Florida, and contains a mix of campus and local news coverage, as well as national and international stories from wire services. It also contains a sports section that begins from the back of the tabloid-format paper, and an entertainment section ("The Avenue"). The Alligator prints on 11 x 14 inch paper, somewhat smaller than a tabloid size, closer in size to the compact format of The Times of London and the Chicago Sun-Times.

“We’ve waited for several months for UF to come back to the table, and it was met with another brick wall,” Britton said at the bargaining session.

He said GAU made “zero progress” over the last several months because the university hasn’t changed its proposal on stipend increases in almost a year. UF wanted to raise the stipend by just $1,000 for graduate assistants on nine-month appointments.

The decision is part of a university-wide effort to identify new efficiencies, eliminate duplicative efforts and cut costs, UF spokesperson Cynthia Roldán Hernández wrote in an email.

The health fair was supported and organized by Children Beyond Our Borders, Equal Access Clinic Network, Mobile Outreach Clinic, UF Health Cancer Center, Project Continuity and Parkview Baptist Church.
Jamie Hensley, assistant director of cancer screening and care navigation at the UF Health Cancer Center, said her team seeks to bring preventive services to the entire community.

With the libraries’ future in mind, Reakes said he’s focused on UF’s upcoming capital campaign, a fundraising effort designed to raise money for various initiatives at the university, expanding digital and special collections, completing an ongoing Google books project in the digital collections and working to integrate ethical AI use into libraries and student use.

For Reakes, who calls himself a lifelong Gator, the focus is on student success and is built on his love for the university.

“Think of them as your neighbor, because they are,” said GPD’s PIO, Sadie Darnell. “Any of us could be a survivor of murder or victim, and so we need to recognize that it’s not an isolated thing that only happens to other people.”

In remembrance of the tragedy, a memorial was constructed on Southwest 34th Street in Gainesville in 1990.

The team’s dedication and passion allowed them to overcome construction obstacles, said Solar Gators president Connor Ellis, a 21-year-old UF aerospace engineering senior.

“Everyone on the team works so hard, basically because their peers work so hard,” Ellis said. “You owe it to each other to put the work in to be able to produce such a high-quality car. Respect for the work that everyone else puts in is the greatest contributor.”

Firearm-related deaths have risen among children and adolescents since the COVID-19 pandemic began, with seven children dying by gunfire each day in 2023, according to a KFF study.
