🛣️ Did you know? 🛣️
TxDOT uses Level of Service (or LOS) to assess current conditions and plan future improvements. For example, their study for US 82 (published in July 2024) mentions that most of the highway operates at a LOS of A or B.
TxDOT specifically identifies the area in Gainesville as needing the most attention (at a LOS E), not only because of current traffic patterns, but also considering projected growth in Gainesville. With activity in the Industrial Park that will lead to economic growth for the community, truck traffic is going to increase to approximately 32,000 truck trips per year within the next couple years (construction is scheduled to begin on some projects as early as 2026).
And that's with one organization. Other companies are still "in progress" in their move into the Industrial Park.
According to TxDOT, "The current average daily traffic (ADT) along the US 82 corridor varies greatly, with a low of 1,400 vehicles per day (vpd) to a high of 59,000 vpd. Truck (CMV) traffic accounts for about 17 percent of all traffic along the US 82 corridor, with truck volumes ranging from 205 (2.6 percent) to 9,095 (41 percent) vpd. Traffic operations along the corridor are such that 99.5 percent of the total demand (vehicle-miles traveled) operates at Level of Service (LOS) B or higher along 99.8 percent of the corridor, with the area near the I-35 interchange experiencing the highest annual truck delay, although such delay is relatively moderate."
So while truck traffic isn't extremely high right now, that is projected to change in the near future. Now is the time to collaborate with TxDOT to alleviate congestion and control future growth.
The 3rd slide gives additional information about crashes on HWY 82 versus other major roads through our city. The crashes on 82 have data about CMVs, per public request.
The 4th slide is information about TxDOT's Open House about the 82 Relief Road. Per TxDOT, "The open house will be a 'come and go' style workshop with a presentation on repeat. We will also have the proposed alternatives printed out for the public to review and make comments on. There will be numerous members from TxDOT and affiliates to answer questions. The main purpose of the meeting is to provide the public an opportunity to be heard."
