I am excited to announce NABBW's October Financial ZOOM Call. We will be covering a growing and serious problem and hoping to find some solutions. The issue:

Why Are So Many Baby Boomers Sliding Into Homelessness?

This isn't supposed to happen to our generation. For decades we have been touted as the "healthiest, wealthiest, smartest generation ever." Certainly we were the largest generation.

But now you can read articles about this in publications such as Money, Forbes, The Wall Street Journal. People who were happily living stable retirement lives are suddenly finding themselves without the purchasing power they formerly enjoyed -- and forced to live in homeless camps, their cars or perhaps "couch surfing" if they have friends who can take them in.

How did this happen and how can we stop this growing trend?

Please join us on THURSDAY, OCTOBER 26, at 7 PM Central Time for an hour long ZOOM call, in which NABBW's "Boomer in Chief," Anne L. Holmes talks with Pamela J. Sams, BFA, CRPC, MBA and Trusted Advisor to Professional Women, as well as NABBW's Retirement Planning Associate, as we unwrap the causes of this growing issue and look for solutions.

Here's How to Join Us. Feel free to bring your questions...

I read a tweet this afternoon that led me Allyson Felix's TIME magazine article about Tori Bowie's death.

Even though my two children are in their 40s, maternal health issues strike very close to home for me.

I nearly died of pre-eclamptic toxemia with my first pregnancy in 1977, and spent the last 6 weeks of my pregnancy in the hospital. Once I was allowed to come home after my daughter'd birth, I had to have full-time assistance for a month. We brought in my mother, who was absolutely NOT any help!! She just wanted to deep clean my house, which I had done the November 2 month's prior.

My mother absolutely would not change my daughter’s diapers, she said she couldn't figure out how to put them on. And messy diapers were totally my job.

Since I was nursing, my mother also couldn’t help with the feeding parts. I remember that I had never ever felt as exhausted as I did in the first 6 months of Jen’s life.

My daughter is now 45 – and I am totally disgusted to find out that almost 50 years later, WOMEN ARE STILL DYING OF PREGNANCY IN THE UNITED STATES!!! Worse, this situation is now apparently race related. Which makes me just sick at heart.

I don’t know what I can do about this. I'm looking for ideas. Here is the article I read about this:

"Three gold medalists from that 4 x 100 relay team in Rio set out to become mothers. All three of us...had serious complications."

The Oscars are coming up soon, given that the nominations were just announced. I have some movies to watch before I can cut my own personal votes and see how I far against the Academy. But here's something fun just published in the LA Times. A look back at the Oscar winners from the 70s. https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/movies/story/2023-01-25/oscars-best-picture-winners-how-to-watch-1970s

Apparently, the LA Times has other similar lists from other decades, too. Might be fun to review them and see which movies would still hold up against audiences of today...

Our guide to streaming the winners of the Academy Awards' top prize, including 'The Godfather' and 'Rocky.'

Fascinating article! Can aging be cured? Scientists are giving it a try. Check out this National Geographic article, "Living LONGER and BETTER," by Fran Smith with excellent photos by
Jasper Doest, David Guttenfelder, Nichole Sobecki, and Melanie Wenger, which found via Apple News. In short it is about how scientists are working to extend our lifespans.

Then let's talk: Would you like to live well beyond 100 IF you could be healthy and fully capable of enjoying life? Here's the link:

I haven't finished reading this article yet, but it's from USAToday, so I'm sure the reporting is reliable. Apparently a group of USA Today reporters, including Jayme Fraser and Nick Penzenstadler, USA TODAY, with Jeff Kelly Lowenstein, also of USA TODAY, have just published their in-depth findings related to ongoing staffing problems in skilled care nursing facilities.

Sadly, the article begins with this sobering lede: "Regulators have allowed thousands of nursing homes across America to flout federal staffing rules by going an entire day and night without a registered nurse on duty, a USA TODAY investigation has found.

Nearly all of them got away with it: Only 4% were cited by government inspectors. Even fewer were fined..."

If you want to know more specifics, I've included the link to the article below. Remember, nursing homes are not just for octogenarians with dementia. You might end up in one after an accident, as my husband did. So check out this story, please:

President Biden has promised tougher standards, but USA TODAY found the government rarely enforces existing guidelines.

Sharing this excellent article on death doulas, which I found in the
Beacon Senior News, the Voice of Adults 50+ in Western Colorado.
I know that during Covid, many of us, including me, had had to deal a loved one's death - in my case my mother - without the ability to be there personally. It's nice to know our loved ones, or we ourselves, can be assured to have someone with us during scary times, like end of life. This article by Diana Barnett explains the comforting role of a death doula.

Originally, doulas supported new mothers through birth. Now end-of-life doulas support individuals and families with the transition from life.
