I was driving around today, listening to Jimmy Eat World’s album, Bleed American, and the song “Hear You Me” came on. It is a beautiful, acoustic ballad placed right after arguably one of their best songs, “Sweetness”. It breathes that classic 2000’s emo record along with the lines of Dashboard Confessional.
I don’t get to play the song often as it doesn’t exactly scream “wedding material” but I do enjoy listening to it in the truck. When I heard it today, it reminded me of a time in my life where I wanted to be that person that selected the songs that would be used in movies. I think the technical term is Music Supervisor. Nothing glorious. Should probably say Master Soundscape Artist. I think it sounds more appropriate. Agreed?
Anyways, I loved finding music that truly embodies what our eyes are seeing. Many moons ago, before all of this, I would turn on my old iMac bubble, open up iMovie, rip off YouTube videos of tv shows I enjoyed watching, and make music videos from them. “Hear You Me” earned its rightful place on one of my favorite shows, Lost. It was the scene where Shannon runs in the jungle rain looking for Walt and she is shot. Sayid, holding her in his arms, professes his love and loses her all in the same moment. When I made that video using the song and actual sounds from the scene, it was incredible. Sayid professes his love during the acoustic interlude. A shot rings out and the apex of the song hits. My cuts and timing of that scene were impeccable.
My movie editing career from decades ago has come to end, but the passion and artistry to shape a scene with the perfect song lives on. I love when my couples give me the freedom to hand pick and sometimes even create the perfect song for each of their moments. And I look forward to the day that I’m known for that alone. True artistry in its beauty.
