Tennis Drops Pair on Saturday

MONMOUTH, ILL. The Monmouth College women's tennis team played two home matches on Saturday with a 5-2 loss to Loras and a 4-3 loss to Millikin.

Against Loras, Senior Ivana Stefanova (Streamwood, Illinois) moved to 2-0 on the season in singles with a 6-0, 6-3 win. Freshman Jenny Nelson (Wentzville, Missouri) won the opening set at No. 2 singles but ultimately fell in a tiebreaker. Kimber Calvert (Paris, Illinois) and Tiah Riggs (Vincennes, Indiana) lost 6-3 at No. 2 doubles. At No. 5 singles, Delaney Albarram (Chicago, Illinois) lost 6-4, 6-0 and Korryn Keehner (Staunton, Illinois) fell 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6.

Monmouth won the doubles points against the Duhawks. Stefanova and Nelson won at No. 1 doubles with a 7-2 win in a tiebreaker. Calvert and Riggs won 6-2 at No. 2 doubles while Albarram and Alayna McKinley (Rock Island, Illinois) lost 6-1 at No. 3.

Against Millikin in the afternoon match, Stefanova won at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-1. Nelson picked up her first college win at No. 2 with a 6-2, 6-3 win. Riggs won 7-5, 6-2 at No. 4. Millikin took wins at No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6.

The doubles points went to Millikin as they won at No. 1 6-4 and No. 3 6-1. Calvert and Riggs won at No. 2 for Monmouth, 7-5.

"It was a long hot day but the team competed well and we definitely raised the level of our game compared to last year," said head coach Brian Dahlstrom. "A couple matches could have gone either way and it was great to see Jenny get her first win and Ivana had a terrific day against good competition."

MONMOUTH MOMENTS: With her 32nd and 33rd career singles win, Stefanova is third on the Monmouth career singles wins list. She also avenged one of her previous singles losses with the singles win against Loras. Nelson earned her first career win with the doubles win over Loras and then picked up her first career singles win as well. Riggs got her first singles win of the season and combined with Calvert for their first doubles win.

Men's Soccer Drops Home Opener to Whitewater

MONMOUTH, ILL. The Monmouth College men's soccer team dropped their home opener 9-0 to Wisconsin-Whitewater on Friday. The Fighting Scots are 0-2 on the season heading into a Sunday afternoon game at Eureka.

The Warhawks scored in the seventh minute and made it 2-0 just two minutes later. A goal with 13 seconds left in the half made it 3-0 at the break.

The visitors scored four minutes into the second half and went on to add five more goals for the 9-0 win. Freshman goalkeeper Calvin Cotton (Hernando, Mississippi) made eight saves. .

MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Kolbe Hightower (Abingdon, Illinois), and Paul Oros (El Paso, Illinois) had shots on goal for the Fighting Scots ... Whitewater leads the all-time series 4-0 ...

Volleyball Drops Pair to Ranked Teams on Saturday

MONMOUTH, ILL. The Monmouth College volleyball team fell 3-0 in both matches against nationally ranked teams on Saturday at the IWU Invite. The Fighting Scots (1-3) lost 25-21, 25-18, 25-12 to No. 24 Dubuque and 25-14, 25-19. 25-12 to No. 17 Hope.

Against Dubuque in the first match, Kaylee Celus (Annawan, Illinois) led the way with eight kills while Chloe Strachan (Reynolds, Illinois) added seven and Bri Woodard (Monmouth, Illinois) had six. Tyla Mattson (Morton, Illinois) led the way with seven assists while Zoe Nizzia (Pekin, Illinois) had six.

Abby Viano (Braidwood, Illinois) led the team with five blocks while Melina Teunis (Grand Haven, Michigan) and Woodard both had three. Nizzia led the team with 12 digs and Kami Barth (Washington, Illinois) had 10. Celus had two aces to head the Scots.

In the second match against Hope, Celus led the way with seven kills and one ace. Katie Whitson (Mackinaw, Illinois) had six assists and Mattson added four. Strachan and Viano both had three blocks while Teunis had two. Nizzia led Monmouth with nine digs and Mattson had seven.

MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Whitson made her debut against Dubuque and played in both games Saturday ... Celus had 15 kills on the dayMonmouth had never played Hope ... The Scots are 4-14 all-time against Dubuque with the last matchup coming in 2024 ...

Volleyball Falls to Hendrix at IWU Invite

MONMOUTH, ILL. The Monmouth College volleyball team opened the IWU Invitational with a 3-0 loss to Hendrix (Ark.) on Friday night. The 25-10, 25-16, 25-16 loss drops the Fighting Scots to 1-1 on the season as they prepare for a pair of games on Saturday.

Hendrix scored the first three points in the opening set and never trailed. Kaylee Celus (Annawan, Illinois) picked up the first kill and Chloe Strachan (Reynolds, Illinois) added a pair of kills. Hendrix led 10-5 when Strachan got another kill off a Tyla Mattson (Morton, Illinois) assist. Abby Viano (Braidwood, Illinois) had two straight kills to cut the lead to 17-9. Hendrix won eight of the next nine points to win the set 25-10.

Bri Woodard (Monmouth, Illinois) gave the Scots a 1-0 lead in set two with a kill and Celus added one as well. Three aces by Mattson put the Scots on top 7-3 but Hendrix regained the lead at 9-8. Melina Teunis (Grand Haven, Michigan) had a kill and a block but the Scots couldn't get on a run. Leading 15-11, Hendrix pulled away for a 22-13 lead and then closed out the set at 25-15.

Celus started the third set with a kill and Mattson added an ace for a 3-0 lead. The Scots led 5-2 before Hendrix went on a 7-0 run to take control. Their extended run made it 15-6 before Briana Carden (Pecatonica, Illinois) powered down a kill on an assist by Isa Hughes (Chicago, Illinois). Celus had a kill and Teunis added a block but the Scots couldn't get closer than seven. Hendrix led 23-13 when Strachan and Woodard picked up kills to keep the match alive. An error ended the set and match with Hendrix winning 25-16.

Strachan led the way with six kills while Celus had five. Mattson led with six assists and four aces. Kami Barth (Washington, Illinois) and Zoe Nizzia (Pekin, Illinois) both had six digs while Teunis had three blocks.

MONMOUTH MOMENTS: The teams had never met before Friday ... Mattson tied her career high from October 30, 2024 with four aces ... Teunis has at least three blocks in both matches this season ...

Cross Country Teams Start Season at Loras

Men finish fourth out of 10 teams

MONMOUTH, ILL The Monmouth College cross country teams started their seasons Friday night at the Bob Schultz Invite, hosted by Loras. The men finished in fourth place out of 10 teams.

Xander Stoub (Palos Heights, Illinois) finished 14th in the 5000 meter race with a time of 16:34.9. Andrew Peterson (Galesburg, Illinois) made his Monmouth cross country debut after running track last year and finished 19th in 16:42.1. Fernando Avila Rubio (Alpha, Illinois) finished 24th in 16:51.2 and freshman Dawid Opiloa (Arlington Heights, Illinois) finished 29th in 17:01.3. Freshman Wyatt Hall (Oneida, Illinois) was 45th in 17:43.5 and Riley Morgan (Jewett, Illinois) placed 52nd with a time of 18:15.5. Braden Rees (Galesburg, Illinois) ran 18:20.6 to place 54th, just ahead of freshman Jack Wayne (Yorkville, Illinois) in 18:25.4. Larry Kamara (Alpha, Illinois) was 87th in 21:20.1.

The women did not get a team score and were led by freshman Morgan Sheley (Lincoln, Illinois) in 29th place with a time of 22:04.4. Mellissa Bivolarov (Arlington Heights, Illinois) finished 42nd in 24:05.8.

"We were surprised with some rain and lightning pre-race that forced us to combine the races," said head coach Cooper Pauley. "However we got some cooler temps as a result and both groups responded well. We're excited to carry the momentum into Grinnell next weekend."

Men's Soccer Falls 2-1 in Season Opener

Basheer scores, Ten Scots make their college debuts

MONMOUTH, ILL. The Monmouth College men's soccer team dropped their season opener 2-1 at Blackburn on Thursday afternoon. The Fighting Scots return to action on Friday with the home opener against UW-Whitewater at 2:30 p.m.

Neither team had many chances early on but the Beavers converted a penalty kick midway through the first half for a 1-0 lead. With less than two minutes to play in the half, Blackburn scored on a free kick from just outside the box. Freshman goalkeeper Calvin Cotton (Hernando, Mississippi) got a hand to the ball but was unable to prevent the goal. He hit the post on the play and sophomore newcomer Tyce Alumbaugh (Bement, Illinois) made his debut, finishing out the half in net.

The Scots put pressure on Blackburn throughout the second half and Cotton returned to action to make multiple saves. Midway through the half, Monmouth scored their first goal of the season. Cohen Ledet (Maurice, Louisiana) took the ball down the right side and sent a low cross into the box, past the Beavers keeper and defender. Freshman Mubaraq Basheer (Katy, Texas) slotted the ball into the net for his first collegiate goal. The Scots had a chance to tie late but the Beavers keeper made a handful of saves and a shout for a penalty was denied.

MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Ten players made their Monmouth debut in the heat on Thursday ... Alumbaugh, Basheer, Gabe Cadet (Wilmette, Illinois), Nehemiah Coleman (Portland, Oregon). Cotton, Kolbe Hightower (Abingdon, Illinois), Eli Okrasinski (Charleston, Illinois), Tyler Ramsey (East Peoria, Illinois), Christian Romero-Marin (El Paso, Texas) and Tony Zazueta (Haslet, Texas) all saw their first collegiate action ... Cadet, Coleman, Cotton and Romero-Marin all started .... Romero-Marin had to leave with a foot injury during the game ... The Scots used 21 players overall ... Bryan Corona (El Paso, Texas) and Ryan Rodriguez-Gardea (El Paso, Texas) had shots on goal in the first half ... The teams had not met since 2001, a Blackburn win ... The Beavers lead the all-time series 5-4 ...
