On October 13, 1890, Galion earned a unique place in US Presidential history when President Benjamin Harrison became the first sitting president to visit the city. His visit was part of a whistle-stop tour, a common practice of the time, in which presidents traveled by train to connect with voters. While the visit to Galion was locally significant, it is remembered for what might be the shortest speech ever given by a U.S. president—and the unusual circumstances that cut it short.

Destination Mansfield-Richland County was recently recognized for outstanding achievement in tourism marketing and advertising at the Ohio Travel Association’s annual RUBY Awards, held October 2 in Geneva-on-the-Lake. The organization earned a prestigious RUBY Award for its Ohio Bird Sanctuary Marketing Campaign and a Citation of Excellence for its Shawshank30 Highlights video. Kim Miers, Meetings and Marketing Director, accepted the awards on behalf of the organization.

The Ohio Bird Sanctuary is just a few miles east of Galion.

The Galion Public Library has officially joined the SEO (Serving Every Ohioan) Consortium, linking local readers to a network of more than 100 public library systems across Ohio.
