Pioneer Pen Squatter's Rites is the Volunteer State Community College student literary magazine, which features student poetry, essays, photography, art and fiction.

VSCC students should submit writing and art by Sunday, March 19, 2017 to [email protected] for the 2017 issue.

Squatter’s Rites, the Volunteer State Community College student literary and art magazine, is seeking submissions for the 2016 issue. Submit your paintings, poems, photographs, short stories, fan fiction, creative nonfiction, and other creative works to [email protected] for the 2016 edition (Note: High resolution photographs is the best way to submit visual art)! For information on joining the Squatter’s Rites staff, email the adviser, Melissa Tyndall, at [email protected]. All submissions should be in by noon on Friday, April 1, 2016.

Squatter's Rites was first place in the 2015 American Scholastic Press Association's Annual Review and Contest Awards for junior and community colleges with a student population over 2501.

A student, Crista Johnson, also won an individual award-- Outstanding Painting for her work, "Moonlight."

The digital 2014 issue of Squatter's Rites is now available at http://tiny.cc/squattersrites2014. Congratulations to this year's winners! The John MacDougall Literary Excellence Award was presented to A.E. Roberts, for her poem, "I Broke My Shin", and the Fusion Art and Design Award was presented to Allison Pate for her work, “Radiance”.
