UPDATE: Donations are no longer being accepted. Thank you to those who dropped off their donations here at UNM-Gallup. Those donations have been distributed.

ORIGINAL POST: In response to the Oak Ridge Fire on the Navajo Nation, The University of New Mexico-Gallup is announcing a donation drive to help community members who have been impacted by the fire.

UNM-Gallup will begin collecting donations in the Native American Student Success Center, located in Gurley Hall 1123, on Monday, June 30.

According to the Navajo Nation Office of the President and Vice President, donations of the following items are currently being requested (updated 7/3/25):

- NEW towels, washcloths, hand towels
- Laundry baskets
- NEW cots
- NEW bedding, blankets
- NEW mattresses
- NEW pillows
- Packaged foods, non-perishable foods
- NEW undergarments/clothing for men, women, children
- Face masks

This list may be subject to change based on updates from the OPVP website. Donations will be delivered to the Bee Hółdzil Fighting Scouts Events Center in Fort Defiance, Arizona.

Published daily except Thursdays, Sundays, New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Single copy for 50 cents weekdays and $1.50 weekends.

This newspaper is printed in part on recycled paper and is recyclable. We recycle old newspapers and pay 1 cent a pound. Stop by the Gallup Independent at 500 N. Ninth St. in Gallup to drop off your old newspapers.
