There’s always something happening on Galveston Island - especially in August, when summer slowly starts to shift but the energy remains high. While some families wrap up their vacation as the school year begins, thousands of visitors still make their way to the island, soaking up sunshine and savoring everything Galveston offers before the season fades.
This month also brings events like ArtWalk, the Galveston Classic Car Auction, and the Galveston Island Wine Festival, along with a full calendar of tours, live music, and other happenings that reflect our island’s colorful character.
August also marks National Sandwich Month, and our Galveston Monthly food crew took that as a delicious challenge. In this issue, we highlight ten crave-worthy sandwiches from time-honored favorites like the Reuben and Monte Cristo to uniquely Galvestonian creations like the “I Love Lucy” and the “Kickin’ Chicken Kordon Klub.” These flavorful picks reflect the creativity of our local kitchens and the appetites of our readers who shared their favorites online.
Gracing our August 2025 cover is a photograph by Beverly Balowsky, capturing the dazzling display of a male peacock on the West End of the island at Fabien Kennels just past Lafitte's Cove.

Galveston's Guardians of the Sea
How two warships - each bearing the island city’s name - served in dramatically different eras under evolving Navy missions

The city of Galveston boasts a unique naval legacy, having had not one, but two, United States Navy ships proudly bear its name. These two USS Galveston vessels served in distinct eras, establishing a connection between the city's name and American maritime history.
Both ships had multiple identifying numbers linked to their names. When a naval vessel is reclassified or significantly modified to indicate a shift in its role or capabilities, the hull classification number displayed on the hull changes...

A Galveston Island Oasis
A stunning private garden brings Hawaiian charm and vibrant color to island living.

If you were among the many enchanted by the lush, hypnotic world of HBO’s The White Lotus - its tropical splendor, fragrant air, and slow-drifting sense of escape - you don’t need to fly to Maui to feel that magic.
Tucked within the historic charm of Galveston’s Cedar Lawn neighborhood lies a backyard so rich with color, scent, and stillness, it feels like a scene from your own private episode. The backyard garden behind the gate of Seal and Ross Grief’s property is an island oasis.

Galveston Monthly Magazine July 2025 Galveston Dining Exclusive!
Dog Days Galveston Style - Celebrate national hot dog month with local twists that are anything but ordinary.

Technically a sausage, the hot dog is loosely defined as ground or minced meat mixed with spices, known for its smooth texture, typically stuffed into a casing and served on a bun.

Call them what you will - frankfurters, wieners, red hots, or Coney Islands - these savory staples have captured America’s taste buds for generations. There’s just something irresistible about a well-dressed hot dog in all its juicy, flavorful glory.

In honor of National Hot Dog Month, Galveston Monthly has rounded up a mouthwatering list of inventive franks crafted by some of the island’s most imaginative chefs.

***Please note that the Stuttgarden location in downtown Galveston has closed down. Those wants to enjoy their great menu items will need to visit their Texas City location at 10000 Emmett F Lowry Expy Suite 1346 in the Mainland City Centre next to the movie theater.

The Little Building with a Big History - 2417 Strand

Nestled among the tall, ornamental historic structures on The Strand is a small, one-story building that’s easy to miss but has witnessed 150 years of Galveston history.
One of the oldest structures on The Strand, the 14-by-16-foot brick building finished in stucco was constructed in 1875 by Isidore LeClere (1815-1886), a brother-in-law of Michel Menard (1805-1856), one of the city's founders...

Galveston Monthly Magazine July 2025 Beachcombing Exclusive
A beachcomber’s journey through color, shape, and the thrill of finding sea glass treasures.

Galveston Island has a reputation among beachcombers for being an inadequate place to find sea glass. That is partly true.
As plastic containers continue to replace traditional glass bottles, beachcombers are finding fewer glass treasures than in decades past. Still, there's likely enough sea glass scattered along the shores to keep collectors hunting for generations.
On Galveston’s beaches, however, sea glass tends to be less polished than what’s found on the East Coast. That’s because our island’s fine, powdery sand takes longer to smooth and frost the glass compared to the coarse, gritty sands of rockier coastlines.
As a result, we often come across pieces that aren't fully “cooked” - shards that are not yet ready for picking...
