Galveston Monthly Magazine December 2025 Galveston History Exclusive
Owned by merchants, socialites, and a Rat Pack insider, the circa 1907 residence at 902 16th Street is rich with island lore.

In a neighborhood steeped in Victorian charm, the house at 902 16th Street stands as a quiet tribute to Galveston’s resilience in the wake of the 1900 Storm.
The residence was built for German-born merchant Morris Stern (1864-1944), his wife Ella Rosalind Herman (1879-1946), and their son, Morris Jr. (1903-1980).
Stern’s company, Ullman, Stern & Krausse, operated a network of wholesale grocery warehouses across Texas, purchasing goods in bulk for statewide distribution. The scale of their operation was no small matter...

Galveston Monthly Magazine December 2025 Exclusive - Galveston’s Art Goes Global!
Galveston artists use new tools to share timeless imagination, connecting global audiences with the island’s art scene.

In a city where creativity spills as freely as the Gulf tides, two Galveston artists have discovered that the studio door no longer marks the boundary of their audience. With a few taps on a screen, their work now travels beyond island shores into living rooms, browsers, and newsfeeds around the world.

Although each approaches social media in their own unique way, they share a common joy in sharing their love of art with others. For them, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and short video clips aren’t just platforms - they’re modern galleries, invitations into their creative process, and a source of income...

Galveston Monthly Magazine December 2025 Beachcombing Exclusive
Treasures in the Winter Surf - Why December is one of the best times to search for sand dollars along Galveston’s shoreline.

Why is it that some beachcombers seem to stumble upon sand dollars with ease, while others search for years without spotting a single one? The answer lies in more than just luck.
To improve your odds, it helps to understand what sand dollars are, where they tend to hide, and when conditions are just right for discovery. Add in a touch of folklore and mystery, and it’s easy to see why these delicate treasures have captured the imagination of seaside seekers for generations.
A sand dollar is actually the skeletal remains of a living keyhole urchin, a sea creature that thrives offshore in sandy-bottomed areas typically beyond the beach’s foreshore and along the third sandbar...

Galveston Monthly Magazine December 2025 What’s New in Galveston
Local entrepreneurs blend tradition with innovation, offering unique experiences across the island

Local chef and business owner Concetta Maceo has stepped onto the big stage with her own cooking segment on CW39 Houston. Many will remember her popular YouTube livestreams before COVID; now you can catch Cooking with Concetta every Friday during the 10am hour.
Meanwhile, concierge services are on the rise nationwide, and Galveston is keeping pace. Three locally owned businesses have recently opened on the island, ready to support residents and visitors with tailored event services.
And in other business news, two island favorites have expanded into larger, more accommodating spaces. Read on for the latest details.

In this issue, we take “A Look Back” at the arrival of the first automobiles on the island - a turning point that reshaped Galveston’s streets and culture more than a century ago.
Our feature on local artists highlights Robert Peterson’s Vacation on Canvas gallery and his beloved Timmy Turtle series, alongside sculptor Mike Quinn’s lifelong journey in art. Both stories show how creativity thrives here, blending tradition with technology to reach audiences far beyond the island.
We also spotlight seasonal dining and entertainment, from holiday favorites at Moody Gardens to the Miracle Pop Up Bar, and we continue our tradition of showcasing Galveston’s vibrant art scene through galleries, live performances, and community events. Each page reflects the spirit of the season: joy, connection, and the enduring charm of coastal life.
As part of our ongoing evolution, Galveston Monthly now incorporates AI platforms into our publishing process. These tools help us edit content more efficiently, generate images, fact-check historical details, and refine photo editing.
While the heart of the magazine remains rooted in human creativity and local storytelling, AI has become a valuable partner - allowing us to spend more time curating stories and less time on technical hurdles. It’s another way we ensure each issue is polished, accurate, and visually engaging.
Our December cover, created with the assistance of ChatGBT and refined through Envato, reflects this blend of tradition and innovation. It’s a reminder that while technology continues to change how we work, the essence of Galveston - its history, culture, and community - remains timeless.
As always, thank you for reading and for being part of the Galveston Monthly family. May your holidays be filled with warmth, joy, and the enduring beauty of life on the island.
