Texian Navy Day and the history behind it as we honor the legacy of the Republic of Texas Navy in Galveston

Texian Navy Day is observed annually on the third Saturday of September, a day set aside to honor the courage and determination of the early Texas Navy - those who helped secure the Gulf of Mexico and defend the Republic’s independence at sea.

This year, Texian Navy Day falls on Saturday, September 20, with several commemorative events planned in Galveston to celebrate the rich and colorful legacy of Texas’s maritime defenders.

Two official Texas Navies served the Republic of Texas between 1835 and 1846. Though their fleets were modest and their service brief, their impact on Texas’s fight for independence and coastal protection was profound.

Galveston harbor served as the cradle of this fledgling naval force, which would soon challenge Mexican control of the Gulf and support the Texian Army with critical supplies and strategic disruption.

The first Texas Navy was formally established on November 25, 1835, when the General Council authorized the purchase of four schooners. This move was driven by the urgent need to protect the coastline and disrupt Mexican supply lines during the revolution...

Mushrooms on the Menu
Whether stuffed, sautéed, or simmered in sauce, mushrooms are stealing the spotlight in kitchens across the island.

Can we talk about the magic of mushrooms? Not the psychedelic kind - that’s a different conversation entirely. We’re talking about the rich, earthy, umami-packed fungi that elevate everything from risottos to ravioli, sauces to salads.

September is National Mushroom Month, and the team at Galveston Monthly has curated a list that celebrates the many ways chefs across the island are embracing the magic of mushrooms. Whether you're a longtime fan or just mushroom-curious, these dishes are sure to satisfy...

The Rebirth of 1811 20th Street
After decades of decline, a Houston couple restores the Niccolai Apartments with grit, vision, and a view of the Galvez.

Just a block behind the Grand Galvez, a modest sign on a brick façade quietly identifies the Niccolai Apartments. Completed in 1934, this 91-year-old building stands as a testament to Galveston’s evolving residential landscape.
The Insurance Board records for 1811 20th Street reveal just how tangled the island’s property histories can be. Its story is deeply intertwined with that of 2001 Avenue O ½, making it nearly impossible to chronicle one without the other...

Galveston Monthly Magazine September 2025 What's new in Galveston - New Openings Worth the Buzz
From burgers and dogs to cold drinks and breezy patios, Galveston’s newest spots serve up comfort with a relaxed island vibe.

Galveston’s dining scene just got a lively boost with the debut of three long-awaited restaurants and a new beer garden - all of which opened to enthusiastic crowds and are already making waves on social media. These fresh additions are positioned to thrive during the fall and winter seasons, offering hearty, family-friendly fare like hot dogs, hamburgers, sandwiches, and pub-style favorites.
The beer garden brings a local twist, specializing in craft brews made right here on Galveston Island. And while it’s a haven for beer lovers, it’s also family-friendly, featuring a kids’ corner complete with games and a whimsical playhouse.
Conveniently located with ample parking, all four businesses offer something for everyone - whether you're grabbing a quick bite with the kids, meeting friends for a pint, or settling in for a relaxed afternoon.

In this issue, our food team turns its attention to a humble ingredient with surprising depth: the mushroom. September is National Mushroom Month, and we’ve curated a roundup of seven standout dishes from Galveston restaurants that celebrate this versatile fungi in creative and delicious ways.

From the earthy elegance of Mushroom Risotto and the comfort of Chicken Marsala to coastal creations like Gulf Coast Crab-Stuffed Baby Bellas and Seafood-Stuffed Mushrooms, these dishes reflect the island’s culinary diversity and the chefs who bring it to life.

September is packed with events that showcase Galveston’s culture, creativity, and community spirit. The Galveston Island Shrimp Festival transforms historic downtown into a seafood lover’s paradise, complete with cook-offs, live music, and a lively parade. ArtWalk returns to the streets, inviting visitors to explore local galleries and studios in a celebration of the island’s vibrant arts scene.

The Galveston Sandcastle Festival brings sculptors and spectators to the beach for one of the largest amateur competitions in the country. And the 23rd annual PAWS Gala supports the Galveston Island Humane Society with an evening of elegance and purpose.

This September also marks 125 years since the Great Storm of 1900 - the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history. The Galveston Historical Foundation will host a series of commemorative events from September 3-12, including lectures, exhibitions, and guided tours that honor the lives lost and the resilience of our community.

On our cover this month, we feature Galveston Island Sunset, a striking drone photograph by Andrew Gunn capturing the sun setting over Offatts Bayou. The image showcases the 61st Street Bridge bathed in warm light, offering a serene view of the island’s quieter side.

September is another busy month on the island!

As the summer crowds thin and school swings back into session, Galveston Island enters one of its most quietly charming seasons. September brings a slower pace, milder temperatures, and a different kind of visitor - those who come to stay a little longer, explore a little deeper, and enjoy the island’s many attractions without the rush of peak season.
But don’t mistake the calm for quiet - September is packed with events that showcase Galveston’s culture, creativity, and community spirit.

Hooked on History - A Local Collector’s Passion for Vintage Lures and Tackle

Some collect coins or stamps - but for Mike Kennedy, it started with a weathered wooden tackle box and a lifelong bond with the Texas coast. Though a native Houstonian, Kennedy grew up combing the sands of Galveston’s West End, where his parents built a beach house from scratch in the early 1970s.
Tucked away in the storeroom of that beach house sat a wooden tackle box once owned by Kennedy’s grandfather, “Pop.” Inside lay a trove of classic Texas-made fishing lures - many now considered prized antiques.
What began as a quiet curiosity soon became a lifelong hobby Kennedy couldn’t put down...

The Legacy of 1210 Broadway
This historic Broadway residence stands as a testament to timeless architecture in one of Galveston’s storied neighborhoods.

Just one block east of Sacred Heart Church on Broadway, a charming Victorian home stands as a quiet testament to Galveston’s rich architectural legacy. Adjacent to a peaceful Rosary Garden, the residence holds many stories within its walls. Though some original features have been lost over time, many remain intact.
The upper porch of the home at 1210 Broadway was once uncovered, offering a clear view of the elaborate eave and gable details that originally crowned the bay window - features now removed...
