As Juneteenth approaches, Galveston will mark 161 years since June 19, 1865. One place to better understand that story is Pier 21.

The Middle Passage marker honors the millions of Africans whose lives and families were forever changed by the transatlantic slave trade. It also acknowledges Galveston’s role as a port where enslaved people arrived and were sold.

Today, the marker is the first stop on Galveston’s Freedom Walk and a place to pause, reflect, and remember the history that shaped this island 💙

You may have already come across their presence through Turtles About Town, a public art initiative featuring colorful Kemp’s ridley sea turtle sculptures placed across Galveston.
