My sister’s wedding was going perfectly until my dad suddenly grabbed my hand and said, “Get in the car, now.”
I had no idea what was going on.
“Dad, tell me what’s happening!” I asked.
He stayed silent the entire drive home — then revealed something that left me completely speechless…
I was standing in the banquet hall, trying to make sure everything was perfect for my sister Lily’s wedding. Yet, a sense of unease lingered in the air.
Earlier, in the bridal suite, I had found her wiping away a tear.
“Do you think Mom would have trusted him?” she asked, her voice laced with hidden fear.
I reassured her, but the question stayed in my mind.
Later, during the photoshoot, I caught one of the groom’s friends secretly taking pictures of a folder containing my father’s business documents. It struck me as odd.
“A man with no family, showing up just as your father’s business is recovering?” my Aunt Rachel whispered to me at the reception. “Smells suspicious, dear. Be careful.”
The turning point came when I saw my father standing motionless near a column, his face unusually pale as he stared at his phone. He met my eyes and gave the slightest shake of his head — a silent warning.
Minutes later, he grabbed my hand. “Quickly, to the car. Not a word,” he whispered, pulling me toward the exit.
“Dad, what’s going on?” I protested.
“I’ll explain later. We have to leave now.” The raw anxiety in his voice silenced me.
In the parking lot, he pushed me into the car, his hands trembling as he started the engine.
“You’re scaring me,” I said. “Why did we leave Lily at her own wedding?”
He slammed on the brakes at a red light.
