After nearly two decades of vacancy, the Roosevelt School District is turning a new page with plans to demolish the long-abandoned Harry Daniels Elementary School building. Backed by $4.1 million in state funding secured through the support of New York State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and Assemblyman Noah Burroughs, the district will remove the unsafe structure and begin transforming the property into recreational space for students and residents.

Nassau County homeowners are bracing for rising taxes and unexpected expenses that always seem to pile up. Luckily, they can authorize Maidenbaum to file their property tax grievance for the 2027/28 tax year.

Acting early makes all the difference, because waiting too long could mean missing opportunities, or worse, ending up with a company that doesn’t have the experience to represent you properly. Don’t let misleading promises impact your results – if something seems too good to be true, it usually is!

For more than four decades, Ben Jackson has been a fixture in Freeport through his business, Ben’s General Contracting Corp. Now, the longtime builder finds himself at the center of a zoning debate that could reshape a small stretch just off the Nautical Mile.

Jackson is seeking a variance to convert his Suffolk Street office and construction yard into a market-rate apartment complex, saying the shift is the only way to make the property financially viable after years on the market with no serious buyers.

His initial proposal for 20 one-bedroom units drew questions from the Freeport Zoning Board about parking, density, and height limits, and Jackson has been asked to scale the plan back before resubmitting.

In this conversation with the Herald Jackson explains why he believes new housing could strengthen the area, what he’s willing to change to address concerns, and why, despite the risks, he’s still determined to try.

After questions over parking, density and height, contractor Ben Jackson says he’ll scale his Suffolk Street proposal from 20 to roughly 15–16 one-bedroom units, arguing market-rate housing could boost the off-Mile corridor year-round.

The Nautical Mile in Freeport is expected to come alive Sunday from 12 to 6 p.m. with swashbuckling excitement as the community prepares for its first Pirate Fest, a soon-to-be annual event designed to extend the vibrancy of the waterfront district well beyond the summer months.

Freeport’s first-ever Pirate Fest sets sail Sunday from noon to 6 p.m., with a ribbon-cutting, a costumed boat parade, scavenger hunt, kids’ cove, and pop-up magic shows designed to keep the Mile buzzing past summer.
